Need international phone solutions for business use.

I currently have Sprint 4G with unlimited data/text for $70/month on a Samsung Epic.

I foresee myself going on a lot of international trips in the future, with Iceland being pretty certain in about 2 months but China, Australia, and Peru not out of the picture, just to name a few countries. I need to have an international phone to manage my business while I'm away - text, phone, and data are needed.

1. What would you guys recommend?

2. If a client or contractor of mine needs to get a hold of me on a day to day basis, will they be charged international rates? If so, is there any way around that?

3. How does getting a phone number work? Will it vary depending on the country ie my clients and contractors would need to constantly call me at different numbers depending on where I am?

4. I'm wondering if it would be smarter to just drop Sprint altogether and go with Verizon. I would be paying a much higher monthly domestic rate for the same service, but would it allow me to take the phone anywhere, just swap out SIM cards, and keep the same number with the same phone without having to have two different phones synced and set up the same?

AFAK it's gonna cost you a lot if you want them to be calling your American number. You could pick up a local SIM card for use with a quadband GSM phone of your choice, but then your customers will need to get your new number and be charged long distance. I'm not sure but you may be able to use a VPN and 3g/wifi for google voice or skype, I do this with my computer but never tried with my phone. If it could work then you could just use a google voice number for your clients, or purchase a number on skype.

If I remember I will set my VPN up on my phone to see if I can get google voice or skype to work calling the states for free... seems like it will work, but I'm really not sure nor have I heard of anyone doing it.

When / If you come to China give me a holla, we can go chill! 🙂
