To have abs you must first have a low body fat. I mean single-digit low.

What is your body fat like?

Further, don't just go for abs. Get the whole deal going--pack on some muscle while you're at it. Do you weightlift at all? You can put on 40lbs of lean mass in 6-12 months easily if you don't lift already. All it requires is 3 workouts a week, about an hour each. 3 hours total is nothing to most people.

I'm assuming you are doing this for vanity sake and want to look good for women. Get nice traps with broad shoulders, big arms, bulbous pecs, and big batman-style latissimus dorsi while you're at it. And, of course, have the legs to match.

You'll get all the wimens!

PS Never buy cheap gimmicks like this crap. If you want abs you have to cut your body fat real low. No way you can do it without that. Once you're there, you can do some exercises to make them more pronounced/developed of course.
 
I personally would never invest in a machine unless I absolutely had to. There is enough physics in the motion of the human body being able to achieve so many exercises, that even the best scientists can recommend nearly exact specifics to performing bodily exercises.
Even so, most gyms have enough equipment to help give you an edge for your money. Otherwise, miniature versions of exercise tools are another good option for investing your money in time and space.

You could do the same exercise with just a bar. A bar, damnit! I'd explain how to, but my English isn't good enough 😛. If you have the bar in the right position, just make turns. Turn to the left, turn to the right. After about 15 turns of each, you should start feeling if what you're doing is right. If you don't feel anything, you've either got it wrong, or you're a monster. 😛

If you do, pickup a squat cage with chin-up and dip handlebars, a bench, and an olympic weight set.

That'll keep you busy for the first year.
 
If you want to actually gain practical strength and/or looks, free weights/bodyweight is the only way to go. Bowflex etc = scams.
Also, if you work out only abs and ignore the rest of your core (torso/upper legs), you're going to be terribly unbalanced and will hurt yourself. Especially be ready for back problems if you do this.
 
I should mention that if you decide to buy a squat cage, bench and weights, you should check out craigslist first.

I would never buy cardio equipment from craigslist (too many moving part; it might have a bad history) but weights are perfectly fine. In fact, you can save quite a lot.

Ab machines are bullsh!t. Bowflex isn't as bad as people like to claim - you'd do better with freeweights and spend less money, but at least the thing actually will work, unlike ab contraptions.
 
A bench, various freeweights ranging from 2.5-10 lbs., a set of dumbell bars, sprints, and a diet is all you need. The use of dumbells forces your body to use more muscles to stabilze the dumbell making you do more work per rep.

Your diet makes the biggest impact on how well your body responds to the workouts, that better you eat, that better your results.

Sprints are the best cardio you can do, look at the body of any sprinter. Sprints force your heart rate to flucuate extremely high and low very rapidly, moving lots of oxygen rich blood to the O2 depleted areas. Sprints also make your muscles do lots of work, burning through the glycogen in your muscles extremely quickly and forcing your body to start breaking down fat to use as fuel when your muscles are at rest in between sprints.

Ideal workout, easy warm-up cardio in the beginning to get your blood flowing and muscles warm, freeweight excercise, end with sprints. And when you are done, make sure you feed your body.
