Not sure if this is the correct forum but, anyways...

I currently own a Packard Bell destop system that is approximately 4 years old. They system scoop is as follows:

M II 266 MMX Enhanced processor

4.3 GB HDD

40 MB SyncDRAM

56 Kbps Modem

50X CD ROM "Delta" (installed approx. 8 mos ago - old one gave out)

I am looking to upgrade the CPU only and came across an ad in the local Thrifty Nickle for a Dell CPU. Would like some input as to if what I came across is a decent deal. Here is the scoop on the Dell:

Approx. 2 years old

1 Gigahertz processor Pentium III (was told that this would be 4x faster than what I currently own.)

128 Megs RAM (was told that this would be 3x faster than what I currently own.)

40 Gig HDD (was told that this would be 10x faster than what I currently own.)

8 Speed CDRW (Not sure if I got this number right but going by my notes anyways.)

Creative Sound Blaster

32 Meg. Video Card (Not sure if I got this number right but going by my notes anyways.)

DVD player

Software - The guy says it's my choice of Win 98 OR Millineum (What would you recommend? Currently have Win98) In addition, it include MS Office and other "standard" stuff included such as tutorials, etc.

Not sure about warranty/guarantee as I was just calling to inquire. The guy sells privately and says that he is authorized by Dell to purchase used/rented, etc. systems from them and turn around and sell them...not sure if this is considered refurbed or not.

As far as Of course, I would ask check it out personally before purchase.

So, gimme your thoughts/comments and I'll go from there.

Thanks to all!

that's not a bad deal. i prefer to build my own systems tho. it is possible to build ur own system with similar or better specs at around the same price. so it really depends if u want to spend the time and effort.

NO not 4x faster but faster whoever told you that plain lied or is a dullard

128 Megs RAM (was told that this would be 3x faster than what I currently own.)

how? again a lie or stupidity your ram is on a 66mhz bus, the 128 is on a 100 mhz bus

40 Gig HDD (was told that this would be 10x faster than what I currently own.)

same hare, your hard drive is ata 33, the 40 gig is ata 66 33/66= 33/66mb per sec

all in all, i think you would do better and spend around the same to build your own
being it's a dell it might have integrated 32 meg video so kiss 32 meg of your system ram good bye
is it worth 400 bucks?
that depends on what you expect this machine to do for you

Honestly, I'd spend the extra ~$50 - 100 and have a brand-new Dell or eMachine with similar specs... Skip the middleman and the refurbs if you ask me ;) .

Responding in the order of YOUR responses...BTW, thanks so much for the input.

First - Although I am almost a master when it comes to using computer programs; I am not even at the novice level when it comes to knowing much about the "guts" of the inside workings, specs info, etc. (I get that info on the documentation sticker attached to the CPU...LOL) Therefore, buidling my own is pretty much out of the question. Besides, I wouldn't have the patience to do so. Appreciate the suggestion though Spank.

Secondly - To Cholley: Assuming that I have all the information/terms written down correctly, I will take your comment into consideration as well. As far as the 32 meg video is concerned...question...is that going to affect not only my "streaming video," but my DVD performance as well? Thanks for any other recommendations as well and, forgive my ignorance here.

As for intended use, I want something faster than what I have now. I want to be able to burn cd's. But, nothing over and above that other than what I use this one for now...internet, correspondence, some games, etc. DVD is, to me, just a bonus...can't imagine watching a movie on my computer but if there are other uses for it lemme in on them.

Thirdly - To "Icecool83" May call Dell and see what they would price it out at. On another note...never heard of eMachine...can you send me a link?
