My p4 is running a bit warm i think. Its a 2.26 and running mid to high 40's stock and if i even bump it to 2.4 it goes up to 55 under load (i set the warning at 55 and started up morrowind and 2 mins into it i heard the beeping). Its using stock heatsink/fan, does this seem hot or is this about normal? What temp does it start to be dangerous for the chip.

Also what would be a better heatsink/fan that isn't too expensive, i dont care if its kinda loud, as long as it isn't like a hurricane. I dont want to spend much, if it comes down to spending a bunch for a heatsink or just leaving it at stock, ill leave it at stock, but i know it can easily run stable at 2.6.

Thanks for any input.

I have just absorbed all the cool information from this excellent site. About halfway down this page of the site, they go over not just good (or the best) heat sinks and fans, but they take into consideration the noise generated also. Make sure you scroll to the bottom of the page to get to the hyperlinks that read:

Recommended PSU
CPUs: Ranked by Noise
Recommended Fans
Recommended Hard Drives

Then you can read about the recommended heat sinks, fans and power supplies too.

Go to intel.com and search for Pentium temperature. One of the search results should be a PDF on P4. I think the max temp is 70C.
