Need input on Credit Card Processing

There's way too much information out there on the internet it seems and probably many are scam sites.

I will need a way to process them with the information being taken over the phone and on paper. I will not have the physical credit card.

Transactions will vary from $30-$300 at most.

Thanks!

too much information from a google search is better than very little information from a message board.

2co offers the lowest monthly fees.

CDGCommerce.com offers an excellent way to accept credit cards but there are monthly fees.

If the monthly fees are ok with you then go with CDG, otherwise 2co is most cost effective.

You can go to pretty much any major bank in your town and they will hook you up with a merchant account and merchant services. They will provide you with a starter kit that will include a printer and a terminal and if you want a computer software (along the lines of POSPartner 2000 or similar) in case you don't want to bother with a terminal. The bank will also show you how to set everything up and use it. You will get 24hr free tech support unless the bank you go with is especially anal and/or you have no previous credit history. It's much easier to use the software solution instead of the terminal unless you do a really small volume and you do not plan to have a lot of walk-ins. The software can work through a pc modem or over broadband for authorizing and then settling the charges at the end of the day. The obvious benefit of the software is that your customer database can be randomly accessed and sorted by any field. With a terminal you will have to keep printed reports of all transactions. The bank will also provide you with a VISA/MC banner to put in your window. Keep in mind that if you want to accept AMEX and Discover you will need to set those up directly with their respective merchant services and they will integrate with your bank so all the money gets deposited to the same account (easier for accounting). There is also a way to integrate your credit card processing with your online shopping cart through VeriSign but unless you're doing a lot of transactions and have a powerful db backend site it probably does not make any sense. Examples of banks that I know provide merchant accounts - 5th 3rd Bank, Bank of America.
