This system will be used for gaming, and I want to get the best performance out of it, so I'll definitely try to push that processor past 3.6GHz.

Antec P182 Gun Metal Black $149

Western Digital WD6401AALS 640GB - $84

Sapphire HD4870 1GB - $265
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16814102801

Corsair CMPSU-620HX 620W - $150
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16817139002

Arctic Silver CMQ-22G - $10
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16835100012

OCZ Reaper HPC 4GB (2x2GB) PC1066 - $70
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820227289

ASUS P5Q Deluxe - $190
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16813131297

Intel Q9550 - $310
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16819115041

Noctua NH-U12P - $70
http://www.frozencpu.com/produ...2_AM2754939_940_F.html

Total comes out to around $1300.
I'll also get a 120mm fan to have a push-pull system on the HSF, and an extra fan to the case keep things cool.
The 640GB WD will be used for OS. It's one of the fastest drives out there, and with its capacity should be a good replacemrnt for my current 74GB Raptor. Storage isn't a problem either - I'll just use the three 500s that are in my current PC, and maybe get a fourth one. Same with the optical drive.
I realize that PSU is an overkill, but I want quality, and lots of overhead.
What would you change? How's the motherboard and RAM? I really want very high quality components so I don't have any hardware issues while overclocking.

are also good options

Gigabyte EP45-UD3P is also a good option for a motherboard

DDR2-1000 should suffice to get past 3.6GHz but it's your choice

Neither of those two power supplies is modular. My current case is the P180, and I've made the mistake of not buying a modular PSU. Performance One cases are too cramped for all those cables.
Do you have any recommendations regarding 1000 RAM?

Here's my suggestions...
* Case - Yours is fine, if you like the style.
* HD - The 640GB "Black" is a good drive.
If you've got the extra cash on hand, I'd pop for a 150GB VelociRaptor for the OS & Apps. Then use the 640GB "Black" for storage.
* The 4870/1GB is fine if you're pushing high resolutions.
You could get by cheaper by dropping down to the 512MB version of the 4870 or maybe even the 4850/1GB or 512.
* Mushkin is good but new to the PS scene. Modular PS are over-hyped and over-rated.
I'd pick a PC Power & Cooling 610W @ $60 AR or the Silencer 750W @ $80 AR
* The AS compound is good.
But I prefer the consitancy of the AS5.
* The OCZ Reaper is rated for running at 2.1v.
I don't care for OCZ quality. I'd much more prefer the 4GB Corsair XMS DDR2-800 @ $15 AR (TODAY). It's rated for running at 1.9v
* The Asus MB is fine if you like the brand.
* The Q9550 is a nice CPU.
But if you aren't using applications that can take advantage of the extra cores, it's money wasted. A really nice OCing option would be the E8400 or E8500.
* HS/fan
There's no way I'd spend $70 on that hunk of copper, aluminum and nickle.

How about Xigmatek HDT-S1283 for the cooler?

"How about Xigmatek HDT-S1283 for the cooler?"

They are both the same "blow across" design.
I'm not a Zalman Fanboy, but I much more prefer the "Blow down" sytle of HS to help keep MB components cooled also.
Since the weight is closer to the MB, the blow down types don't have the weight hanging so far off the MB.

Weight distribution isn't a problem. I currently have a Scythe Ninja in my machine, and its size and weight has never been a problem.
