Need Information On Laptops

The main reason I am asking is because I need one for college. I have held off buying one because I was never going to college under such tight time constraints.

For now, I am not looking for one that can play any game past Diablo 2 as my PC is sufficient for gaming. I am looking for something that doesn't have the word "Dell" anywhere on it and preferabbly, I would like to buy it from Newegg.

Now, I have caroused various websites and stores, but I couldn't find one that seems to suit me. My roommate told me of a few websites that let you pick the parts, they build it, and ship it to you, but I am unsure if that would be the better path to go down or if it would be better to buy a pre-built. If someone could toss out some suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated.

Lastly, sorry if this is rather vague, but when it comes to laptops, it just seems that everything is overpriced. If I were looking for a PC, I would just buy the parts and build it, but I have heard that building a laptop as opposed to buying a pre-built is not worth the trouble or time.

Either way, any input is appreciated.

It would help if more information regrading the functions that this laptop will be used for, and your budget were provided.

For example, one gets a different laptop for writing than one does for Video Editing (or rather, the same could be used for both tasks, but you need different levels of performance in different areas)

This laptop will only be used for research and writing papers. I have no plans on going into any type of programming (anymore) or editing for any reasons. At the moment, I just need more prerequisites before I can start on my major.

As for the budget, I think I can go as high as $1500.

anything bought in the last 8 years can do that

dont need to spend $1500 just to type some papers

you can go to office depot or cc or best buy and get a cheapo $399 or $499 machine that would easily suffice
