I got a PCchips Board model M729, It has a BXtel100 Chipset, what are the specs on it? the manual states that it will take up to a P2 450, who made this chipset? and will it take a P3?

If I remember correctly, that's not an Intel chipset. It was a VIA or SiS, with a sticker over the top. Performance is poor, although it should take a Katmai P3.

Hi!

The mysterious "BXcel" on the M729 is ALi's Aladdin Pro-II (using the 1621 north and 1543C south). For detail specs visit http://www.ali.com.tw .

That's a 100 MHz chipset. The M729's CPU voltage supply isn't designed to drive Coppermine type CPUs, so it'll take you up to a non-E, non-B PIII-600 (meaning a 512 KB cache Katmai core P-III) or a Celeron-in-a-slocket up to 533. Celeron 533A and faster are Coppermines too, and aren't supported either.

Your latest BIOS, unsurprisingly, is in the directory http://www.pcchips.com.tw/bios/m729/ . The release notes claim P-III support for the latest file 990224s.rom.

Regards, Peter

AVOID that thing like it's infected with the plague. it's an SIS chipset with a very bad rep as a pile of crap.
