Can I just get a cheap hosting plan and use it for only data backup?
Would I have to buy a domain?

Are there any other cheap suggestions for online data backup?

Thanx,
Ron

define "online" cause technically you could get yourself a DNS service, like noip.org, and just connect directly to another computer and that'd be your "backup" And that's free.

There's a ton of programs out there for this kinda stuff. look around. FreeNAS has support for some of them.

I am not too worried about the software end, I have that covered.
I am mainly just wondering if I can pay for webhosting space, but only use it for data backup, and would I need to purchase a domain?
Thanx,

Ron,

You would not need to register a domain to utilize a hosting service. www.1and1.com has excellent rates and they give you 2G of space. I'm sure you can pay more to get more though. You would not need a domain to take advantage of all of their features. They include a sub-domain by default so you could still access your data by name if you desire.

Well, they don't really give you an IP, they give you a means to connect to your data.

So, if you were to ftp in to your site, you'd probably use their sub domain lets say

user123456.1and1useraccount.com (this is totally inaccurate, I am not sure what there scheme is)

you would enter your credentials and you'd have access to your data. If you hosted a domain you could just use that to connect. So you would enter mydomain.com and your credentials to access your data.

Hope this helps.

Well, of course they offer many other services, dedicated servers for example. So, depending on how much you want to pay you could probably get what you wanted.

Call them, they have an adequate customer service line with someone who will answer these questions more accurately.

Are you looking for out-of-house backup, or something you can get to from outside the house? If it is the latter, you can install (any flavor of unix, linux, ubuntu, whatever) on any weak box, and SSH into it from anywhere. It can live in a closet on your network, and do other jobs for you.

I have been using Carbonite for 2 months. It works fine. But you cant share your data with others. It is only for backup and retrieval if you crash.

So if you need a file at another location because you forgot it at home, carbonite is no good?
