Hi . . .
Got my GA 965P-DS3 and E4300, 2 GB of 667 DDR2, and an aftermarket cpu cooler. I plan to OC around 3.5. After reading a lot of threads and articles it seemed like the best option for me. I was hoping for a revision 3.3 on the mobo but I got a revision 2.0. The store that sold me the stuff says it's no big deal just update the bios and it will be same as rev 3.3. But Gigabyte customer support says that even after updating BIOS there is a difference . . . Rev 2.0 will do 1066 FSB and may be a little more, but the rev 3.3 will do 1333 FSB. What does this mean? I understand my E4300 is at 533 FSB - is 1066 FSB on the mobo enough to get around 3.5 ghz provided the memory and the cooler permits. Should I go through the hassel of taking everything apart and return ? I really don't want to do that if I don't have to.... Please advise

Thanks

A couple of comments:

1. There are differences in the Rev 3.3 board and the Rev 2.0 board that go beyond the bios. The Rev 3.3 board also has additional capacitors around the chip for enhanced stability.

2. Your 4300 is 800 FSB, so you will never see the difference in the 1333 board, unless it is for later down the road when you upgrade to a 1333 chip, but by that time you might as well buy a whole new set-up.

3. I do not think you will be able to get 3.5 out of a 4300, much less running 667 RAM.

Just made my first attempt and system is running stable at 380 FSBX9 . . . . 3.42Ghz. Vcore is @ 1.36875V. I think I can get more. Sys temp @ 37c / Cpu temp @ 34c. I think this will go much further. What is the next step? Should I increase Vcore - my settings seems low compare to others. People are pushing Vcore up to 1.45 plus. Temp seems cool too. I must have a good combination here. what kind of temperature should I stop at? How far can I push Vcore before entering dangerous level. Please advise. really excited - didn't think I would get to 3.42 Ghz soo easily.

stable 3.42 at 1.37? Yeah, I'd say you have A LOT more room. push that chip further!

Go up to 1.4 and see how high you can get.

Don't go over 1.5. :)

slow down, let it burn in. run some test like memtest. it does seems like a good combo you have there. and remember, don't get too greedy, thats when things can go wrong. run your combo @ 3.42 for a month and if she is chugging along effortlessly, then start playing around some more, but again test to see if everything is stable. have fun, your system is already kickin ass and takin names.

Thanks guys . . .

I did spend a lot of time reading up all I could to find the best combination and for budget - I am using the blue orb by thermaltake - it's a H U G E cpu cooler - but so far cooling hasn't been a issue, I am starting to feel like I could have had same result with stock cooler. I think the memory has a lot to do with my success - using that Super Talent 667 rigid module - I went to their site and according to the manufacturer it will do 800 even thou it is rated 667 - and it sure looks like it. But I think I will take it easy and park it here for a month. This is at the high end of my expectations.

update - I pushed the vcore up to 1.525v only got it up to 3.46 - basically another 5mhz more on the FSB. It is not getting hot at all - my $50 cooler was an overkill but it won't go any higher - I think the memory is the weakest link now - it would probably go higher with better memory.

Am I nuts . . . I don't need the fastest machine, just need to feel better knowing I got a value rocket... and it sure is. This little $170 chip is now faster than the top of the line 6800 extreme - much faster.

What are your temps and what cooler are you using? Also what program are you using to measure temps?

I'm envious of your processor. Mine won't hit much over 3.0Ghz stably, no matter how much voltage I pump into it.

I really think it has a lot to do with the right combination vs. good processor. I think OC is more like a cooking. Anyone can throw a bunch of ingridients together and cook and it will be eatable but only if the recipie is followed and the proportion and process is right the same ingridients will make a deliciaous dish. DS3 and e4300 are great combo with decent ram.

im pretty jealous of how your system is 37c and your cpu is 34c on air...............................

Tell me if I am right??? The piece of wire /thermometer that I connected to the cup for the temp display in the front of the case has nothing to do with my reading from the BIOS, or SpeedFan, or Core temp, right? Those temp I am reading are direct feature of the cpu? It can't be wrong ???? I know core 2 duo runs cool but if this seems too cool then it has to be the fan. This think is the biggest cpu cooler I have seen with solid copper bottom and alumunium fins spreasing accross 120mm fan - its huge - and the fan is not even running that high cause the temp is still too low. This cost me 50 bucks but I think it works really well?????

Actually that is idle temp - when I ran prime95 in torture test temp started to move up but still fine - it was around 55 under heavy load. But I have already figured out that core temp is displaying wrong temp. All the others match the bios except core temp. And then I found a bunch of articles and threads with same issures - people complaining core temp temperature is off by 15c vs. all others. I am stable at 3.42 and I will park it here. Tha's enough out of a 1.8 ghz.

what version of CoreTemp are you using? 0.94 is way off on E4300s. 0.95 is a little closer but still a little off. But those temps see right now.

I'm pretty sure you just got lucky with your processor. I have a DS3 and an E4300, as well as Super Talent Ram (like you) and I can't clock over 3.0GHz. You got lucky, congrats.

Great going...

I just hope that my DS3 will be able to take my E6300 to where I want it...3.5GHz (wishful thinking maybe but hey)...
At least 3.2GHz though would be nice.

Are you "stable" with Prime95 or Orthos? How long are you running the tests? I can't get Orthos stable past 3.2 even with 1.45v. You must have one heck of a chip or you aren't running Orthos long enough to be hitting that a/c with so little +core.

Will I be able to get 3.5GHz (I know it varies from chip to chip) with my setup????
