need IE8 on Windows 7

I need to install IE8 or earlier on my Windows 7 64bit but I cannot get any to install. I've downloaded both 32bit and 64bit versions of IE8 from Microsoft's website but they both say they cannot be installed on this OS. I tried running them under Windows Vista compatibility mode, which allowed the setup to run but it fails to install correctly, not specifying why. I was hoping maybe someone knew of a standalone version that will run on Windows 7. The only one I've found was tredosoft's but it does not run on Windows 7.

Didn't Windows 7 come bundled with IE8? If so, then you should be able to run the uninstall for IE9 and end up with the original IE8.

When I first used Windows 7 I was using IE8 and when IE9 was released it was a bad browser which didn't work with many websites so I used IE8 until IE9 had been improved.

This. IE8 was the Win7 default, IE9 the upgrade. Those are your only two choices for IE on Win7 except for the betas at this point.

if IE8 is the default, why am i not able to revert back to that? unchecking it from the Windows features list just makes IE9 disappear, IE8 does not come back or anything. at the same time though, it will not allow me to install IE8 from an installer. this is critical for me because i just purchased an online subscription to Ford factory manuals but IE9 does not display some them properly, i was told i have to use IE8 or lower.

lol, i like how windows haters say that! As if linux and Mac are "easier". You take a windows user and throw them over there, fish out of water. Vice versa....

Not sure if this is what you are refering to, but go to add/remove programs, view installed updates, and uninstall IE9 from there, it will take you back to IE8.

Yes, he found it. The secondary point is that it's incredibly non-intuitive and stupid to be there instead of the list of programs with everything else. Just about everyone except for the MS devs consider IE a separate program from Windows, so installing a new version should put its uninstaller with the rest of the programs, not with updates.
