Need ideas with a good PSU to give to a P180

Take an Enermax or an Antec PSU. The Enermax have server-length cables, so you won't deal with any of those cable length problems people have been having. And Antec recommends its own PSU's, so they're a smart choice as well.

Enermax

AWESOME brand, reliable power supplies...and like was said above, you won't have to use adapters to make your cables reach everywhere you need them to 🙂

mine sure as hell is.

its only tested at 21.3db i think so maybe you can swap it out later 😛

sorry hijacking thread. Can my noisetaker cable reach the motherboard? does it have the length to snake behind and not obstruct air or is it tight fit or will it not connect at all?

Have never come across a QUALITY PSU that fails to regulate to within plus/minus 3%. My Enermax 495 Noisetaker V2.0 doesn't even drop below 12.1VDC at full load. And yes, I use a calibrated DMM.

I prefer a dual fan PSU. This design is more efficient in moving air at low to medium speed (push/pull).

That Antec has an efficiency rating of 70%. My Enermax is rated at 75%. There's a difference of 40 watts between the two PSUs. That's insignificant when you consider the $75 price tag of the Enermax.

Stick with Enermax and Fortron if you want to get the most performance with the least amount of $.

I would also look at the Antec Smart Power 2.0 series. I picked up a 500 watt for cheap ($50) and they have the pull-through fan design (one 80 on each end) that works perfectly for the P180 psu case. The pull through design negates the need for a 120mm fan down there and does not have a useless fan on the bottom of the PSU.

Another benefit is that the smart power 500 watt has moduler cables, 17a 12v1 and 19a 12v2

I put an OCZ Modstream in my P180, it fits installed upside down, the cables are tough to bend and I'm not sure if it's going to reach the power slot on my Asus A8N-E, won't be able to tell until I pick the parts up on thursday

Yeah. I have a TP 2 in an P180. The HDD power cables are really long, and had no trouble reaching the top drive bay.

It took me a while to get a sensible hookup with all the case fan plugs though, but that's as much the P180 design as the power supply.

i have tp2 380 watt powering 4 hd with one being a raptor. so far so good. cable length is plenty long and is super quiet in my p180

It can easily connect, although not quite long enough to properly hide behind the drive cages.

They are. I have a TruePower II 550 in my P180. It's inaudible (at least to my ears). The fellow who fired off that nonsense about "Too bad they're so noisy." was obviously speaking out of ignorance of this particular product.

Absolutely. It works very nicely, as you might expect since both are cutting-edge products from the same company. Of most importance, the extra (4-pin) 12V cable that must reach the top side of the motherboard is plenty long enough on this PSU. Still, my advice to anyone with their 12V connector located in that position would be to install the PSU before the motherboard so that this cable can be routed underneath the motherboard to emerge right beside the connector. This advice would apply to any PSU used in the P180, nut just the TPII.

I cannot emphasize enough how quiet this PSU is.

It's efficiency is 70%. You can get 75% out of some PSUs and even 80% out of some Seasonics and the Antec Phantom 500, but in the P180, where the PSU is thermally isolated, 70% is plenty good enough. Considering the significant cost differential, I doubt that you could ever keep the PSUs long enough to break even on electrical savings.

Bottom line: You can spend a lot more money, but the Antec TruePower II 550 is not cutting corners for a computer in the P180 case. It's all the PSU you need, even with an SLI setup, it's very quiet, Antec's are well-built, reliable units, and it can be had for less than $90. Win/win.

Hey OP,

How about the Sparkle FSP550-60PLG - best $85. (per froogle) you can spend on a PSU, IMO.
Full range AC reg and active PFC. I'm pretty sure those have server length cables.
