I'm putting together a linux file server running debian. using samba for the windows side of things.
I really don't need a lot of power but I need more than an old P2 450 or something.

I'm planning on putting in a 3ware raid card and running raid 1 or 5 for a small business.

maybe a 845G chipset w/ a celeron?

also anyone know a good powersupply for something like this? I don't need a $100 truepower 550 watt.

Antec SLK3700 makes a good server case for $65 (newegg) including power supply. 5 HD bays with spacing between each. My FLAC music server is running on a (p3 tualatin) celeron 1.3a with 4 drives in one (30, 120, 250, 250 GB) and I've had zero problmes.

845 + celeron 2.0 will work very well, though of course not as fast as a real P4. The most important point for a file server is enough memory -- but 512 MB should be fine since it's linux not W2K server.

i think the 350W or 400W allied runs for around $40 on newegg.

the antec smartpower is also a pretty good value if you can find it cheap. it is also quiet

well here is my idea
$110.00----D845GERG2LK from intel, it has onboard gigabit ethernet which I want and I don't have to pay an extra $40 for an add in card. also has onboard video and sound.
$69.00 2.0GHz celeron retail
$70.00 512MB ram (est)
$350.00 3ware 8500-4 SATA raid card
$272.00 (2)x # 6Y120MO maxtor 120GB HD in raid 1

total: about $1000
running debian linux

Why not PATA? drives are much cheaper and you don't lose any performance -- even a gigabit LAN won't saturate the read/write sustained transfer of a RAID5 array.

just thinking of future upgrades. the cost difference was about $100.
