SLK800/900 - Too expensive
Volcano 7+ - Too loud

I'm looking to spend 20-30 shipped, I care about noise and more importantly cooling.

SK-7 is $20 at svc.com and cools almost as well as an SLK-800, given the same fan. It has full copper construction and takes 80mm fans (or 60 x 25's too). If you get one, take note: it can slide back and forth on its clip a bit. When you hook the non-screwdriver end of the clip to the CPU socket, pull the heatsink to that end so it's as far away from the solid-plastic end of the CPU socket as it can go. Otherwise it can get jacked up on the solid-plastic end of the CPU socket and then it won't make flat contact with your CPU core.

(oh, and the YS Tech 80mm adjustable fan is a good pick to go with that, you can dial up the noise/cooling level you like)

That's right, to the point where you wouldn't even notice :)
The Y.S. Tech is a nice fan, but if you don't want to fiddle with an adjustable fan, get the Panaflo L1A over the Vantec Stealth. The Panaflo is actually quieter, and has a much better reputation for quality.

Ok I'm settled on the SK-7, now for choosing a fan. The Panaflo just doesn't seem to move much air so I'd like to rule out the super-quiet low-flowing fans.

The Panaflo L1A is a good pick even for moderate overclocking, I seem to recall people around here getting to 2200MHz with L1A's on SLK-800's and Alpha PAL8045's. Unfortunately, SVC seems to be out of them! :(

Try getting the Zalman from svc for only $5.49. This gives you two choices: no resistor= 39CFM at 34.4 dba or if you want to test it out on silent setting attach the resistor and get 20.6 CFM at only 20dba. If that doesn't keep your processor cool enough then just remove the resistor.

I just ordered this fan with the sk-7 from svc yesterday and will be upgrading my wifes with it. I love my slk-800 on my pc and thought this would be a cheaper alternative fo her, though I plan on using the resistor.

Edit: For you information: SVC reports the CFM incorrectly for the low setting. They report 28CFM in some places and 20.6 in others. 20.6CFM is correct according to Zalman's website.

it's a good cooler because:

A. it's not expensive
B. looks cool.
C. has a good clip
D. cools decent
E. it's not very loud.

I really like my Vantec Aeroflow.

Yes, I've a lot of really good things about those.. i'm just skeptical due to the smaller fan size. Isn't it more of a shrill sound? Plus it's actually rated at 38dB- Kinda loud to me.

Thanks for the input everyone!

I've ordered an SK-7, a 3-pin YS-Tech (varibale speed), and some ASIII.

I'll prolly be asking for more help when it comes time to apply the ASIII (seems scary), there happen to be any tutorials out there for it?
