I'm helping my friend look for stuff to get a home theatre going. Hes got a 23x20' room, with a 65" Toshiba hdtv in it. We're looking for a receiver, speakers and a dvd player...heres what we are looking at so far, just want some thoughts on it I guess...or suggestions if you know something better for the same price range.

Klipsch Synergy System 6 for $699
Marantz SR7200 for ~$560

No idea what DVD player to look for, but we do want one with progressive scan.

TIA

You can never do better than Klipsch.....I have the 15" sub, and have never had a problem with it.

Nice receiver.
I personally don't like Klipsch (horns) for HT but they are great for music.
All DVD players are relatively the same in the mid price range. Just get one with the features you want.

What do you guys think of the Denon AVR-4802? Can get it for 1700....it looks awesome, and has a sweet remote. Heres a link crotchfield has it on their site too with more detailed specs.

Yup, Outlaw Audio's Model 1050 is excellent value.

Isn't it only 65 watts?

doesn't really matter... if you get good speaks you'll only be using a fraction of that.

Yeah...were just trying to figure out...wether to get a receiver and speakers for like 1200, or go all out and spend 4000 or so...its a tough choice

I hear great things about Outlaw but I guess you would need some very efficient speakers. What would you say, 93 dB SPL?

Well, let's take a look at the numbers here to put this into perspective.

For a 3 decibel increase in volume, you need to double the wattage. Three decibels is called a "barely detectable difference" or something similar to that.

So, to get a sound that just barely noticeable as louder, you'd need a 130 watt amp.

Let's take this further...

Klipsch speakers are generally known for their efficiency. The mains in this system, according to the website, are 92dB @ 1W/1m

So, if you feed one watt into these babies, they're putting out 92 decibels. That's reasonably loud.

At 2 watts, you get 95dB
4 watts = 98 dB
8 watts = 101 dB
16 watts = 105 dB
32 watts = 108 dB
64 watts = 111 dB

So that amp can drive these speakers to play at 110 decibels.

Is that loud enough for you?

Say you have around $1000 and need to get speakers for a 23x20 room. Wanna get a "warm" sounding setup. Will be used mostly for DVD's and football games(no music)...so, $1000 for 5.1 or 6.1 speakers. We're gonna worry about receiver after we figure the speakers out. What would you guys reccomend?
