Need Home Network Opinions.

Does anybody have an opinion on this setup for my home network? Both servers I will get for next to nothing from a company that?s upgraded its network. I can get the rest of the equipment for about $500 so it really is a great deal. Will I have any compatibility issues at all? Let me know what you guys think. Before you say it yes I know it may be overkill but it's also a great learning setup.

Netgear FVX538 VPN ProSafe Firewall
Netgear WG302 ProSafe Wireless Access Point
HP ProCurve 2524 Switch (with 2 Gigabit Transceivers)
RCA Cable Modem
Dell PowerVault 705N NAS
Dell PowerVault 210S Drive Array Storage Rack

Is the HP ProCurve 2524 Switch a purchase? If so, seems like alot of money for a 10/100 switch. Do you have a use for the 2 gigabit tranceivers? Maybe consider a Netgear or Linksys 10/100/1000 switch, cheaper and this will allow you to upgrade you network to gigabit. Linksys even has a gigabit switch with a tranceiver if you do need it, for less money that the 10/100 HP ProCurve.

I can get most of this stuff used for a good price. I was also looking at these, what do you think?

LINKSYS SR2024C 10/100/1000
LINKSYS SRW224 10/100/1000
NETGEAR ProSafe FS726T 10/100/1000

Only the SR2024C has gigabit on every port. It's not clear if it supports (9 KB) jumbo frames. It's not clear if it's fanless. I recommend checking out these two points with Linksys sales/support.

For learning, you might be better off with an older 10/100 Cisco. (Search for specific recommendations.)

For GbE performance, the unmanaged Linksys would obviously be better.

Good advice. I will be taking my CCNA prep 1 and 2 next semester so I will get something from cisco kits. For now I will get something basic to learn on and that will be a Dell PowerConnect 2324.

For the PowerConnect 2324 there is nothing to learn, it's just a basic switch. If you are going to spend $100 scope out eBay for some good used Catalyst equiptment.

There have been a few CCNA threads recently on what is good hardware to buy. You may as well start acquiring your Cisco hardware now without wasting money in the long run.

i heard CCNA is harder now, but i got mine 6 years ago after 1 month of book studying because it was my last month at that job and I was bored from lack of work. it wasn't too hard. If you want to study for CCNA check out RouterSim. A lot less money than buying the hardware. then get a job and study for the CCNP on the real stuff.
