i want to upgrade my mainboard, anyone know how i can save my harddisk (don't want to format the drive and reinstall OS and program files).

Not necessarily. If you can remove the IDE drivers you may get by without having to format.

That is true....but...

I have tried this before. I was kicking myself for not reinstalling when I was done. The install (while working) was so dirty when I was done that it was a bad idea from the get-go. And, this ignores the fact that it took a long time as well.

Assuming you're on Windows, a fresh install with new drivers is a good idea every once in a while anyway.

if just went through this and did not reinstall xp. however, i did have to update the harddrive driver to "standard dual pci ide controller" before removing from old system and installing into new one. i have had no problems. different processor, mobo, memory.

this was done on our e-mail and internet surf computer we have in the study not my gaming rig.
