I'd like to download Mandrake or Red Hat (whichever is better and easy to learn🙂 ) but I'm not sure what all these ISO files and everything means. Is there anyway I can just download one huge .exe file or something and install it from there?

-Oh and I need to be able to dual boot it with Win2K Pro.

The isos are to be burnt onto a cdr and installed from there. And it will dualboot with Windows just fine. If you are installing it on the same disk, use Mandrake if you dont have empty space before 8GB on the disk.

I didn't get this part. So if I'm installing both OSs on the same HHD I should use Mandrake?

If you are installing linux on the hard drive PAST the first 8GB (ie 10 GB Windows partition + 10 GB linux partition) use Mandrake. It uses a newer lilo which makes up for crappy x86 design flaws I mean limitations. 😉

Cool man thanks. So at the moment I'm at Mandrake.com and they say I should download "Mandrake/" and "images/" trees from the "8.0/" directory. Then I'll download the ISO correct? So after that I'll take all those files and burn them to a CD-R, right? Then put in the CD-R and it will autorun, right? Sorry for all the questions but I'm new to this😀

There should be probably 2 iso's. Download the install one and maybe the extra's one. Then burn the iso's to cdr, put the install one in, reboot, and panic as you realize you have no clue what you are doing 😛

So I need to download everything in the "8.0" directory first, right? Then download the 2 ISOs? I just want to make sure I'm doing this right😀

Cool. I'll just get those.

Got a few more questions. Will it ask me during the install if I'd like to do a dual boot? Am I going to have to go back and find the drivers for all of my hardware for Linux?

It will give you the option of installing LILO (LInux LOader) in the MBR or on the boot partition of the linux install. If you put it in the MBR you will be able to dual boot using LILO, if you put it in the boot partition of the linux install you cna use win2k's botloader.

<< Will I need to do anything special or will it just ask me the first time a boot it up? >>

It depends on how you choose to install LILO. If you put it in the MBR it should detect Win2k. Make sure you make a boot floppy incase it doesnt work. Also check linuxdoc.org, linuxnewbie.org, and search these forums here.

<< If I partition for Linux will I have to repartition the whole drive, losing Win2K in the process? >>

If you have extra un-used space at the end of the harddrive you will not have to worry about the win2k partitions. If however, you have 1 big partition covering the ENTIRE disk, you will need to free up some space (even a second HDD would work fine).
