Hey, I'm in need of some advice from the pros on this site.

I'm looking at building a computer and I'm having some trouble deciding between the parts available. I don't have much experience building a computer. The main debate in my brain is over the CPU but I would love advice on all components since I don't even know if they are compatible.

Here are the two options.
1) Intel Core i5 750 Quad Core (or i7 860)
Ripjaws 10666 4GB DDR3-1333
MSI P55-GD55 Motherboard

2) AMD Phenom II X6 Processor
Ripjaws 12800 4GB DDR3-1600
ASUS M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 Motherboard
I'm scared to overclock with my limited knowledge of computers unless someone really convinces me it's necessary. Thanks to anyone who helps a newcomer like me.

First you decide which stuff you need.
USB3? HDMI (for on-board graphics)? etc. select a board. Then you find the manufacturer.

On the manufacturer site i.e. MSI Site
http://www.msi.com/product/mb/P55-GD55.html#/?div=TestReport

1. you click [support] - then [support CPU] to find a list with supported CPUs
2. click [test support] - [memory modules] to find a .pdf list containing all compatible RAM.
This way you make sure it all fits.

Get an i7 2500k CPU. Thats what you need. Then find an LGA1155 motherboard to go with it, something made by Asus and with a P67 chipset.

That's last gen chip. I don't know what you use your computer for, you might not need to overclock, but since you mentioned it I'd get the i5 - 2500k. The k means you can overclock it.

If you go with the P67 chipset previously mentioned, you would not be able to use the integrated graphics or quick sync. If you're a gamer it will not matter because you will need a separate graphics card. Just wanted to point that out.

H67 allows using integrated graphics and quick sync but no overclock.

The Z68 chipset can do both - overclock and use integrated graphics, plus some new features like SSD caching and hybrid graphics - switching between integrated graphics and stand alone card.

Some of the simpler Z68 boards aren't much more than an H or P so it would give you more options. Some people like the idea of being able to switch to integrated graphics for a temp solution if there's ever a problem with the stand alone card.

There are a lot of good 2nd generation Intel® Core™ processors out there but the best value right now is the Intel Core i5-2500K because it is unlocked. Being unlocked doesnt mean that you are going to have to overclock the processor but it does mean that you can. With the Intel Core i5-2500K you can get a fairly good overclock by simply changing the multiplier in the Bios from 33 to 40 it is simple.

With a P67 or Z68 board you will be able to overclock the processor but you will also get the board that is designed to be a performance oriented board. The Z68 is everything that the P67 is except that it has 3 features that are different. Those features are the Intel SRT (Smart Response Technology) that allows SSD caching with a SSD smaller then 64GB, support for the IGP (Intergraded Graphics on Processor) and support for the Lucidlogix Virtu software, and the last feature differences is that the Z68 has an Intel SATA III controller that performs better then the Marvell controller that was used on the earlier chipsets.

Phenoms are 2 year old 45nm (as in last generation) pieces of ... hardware.

Maybe, you should look for anything AMD "Liano" (32nm) they are priced similarly and got to be much more efficient. Its the perfect time to buy one of those.

Hello tabishali, and welcome to AnandTech forums.

Socket 1156 (Core i5 750 or 760) is outdated. The AMD stuff is good if you know you will need six cores. If you aren't sure, then you don't need them. Alternately, if you need a CHEAP quad core, then AMD can be a good choice.

This leaves socket 1155. The CPU of choice (if budget allows) is the $215 Core i5-2500k. It will work with any socket 1155 motherboard, though not all boards allow overclocking. You mentioned you were "scared to overclock." Well, the 2500k is just the CPU for you. Here's how to overclock a 2500k, even with the stock heatsink and with perfect safety.

Step 1, go into BIOS and increase the multiplier to 40.

That's it! Done! It can go higher, but I think anyone will agree that it will be perfectly fine at 4.0GHz (up from 3.3GHz) with no worry or fuss.
