need help!

Hi,
I'm a total noob at wireless...so any help would be appreciated. I'm not a tech..just taught myself most of what I know from computers and some help from knowledgabel people like you.

My problem: After carefully reading the instruction in the booklet sent with my D-Link 524G router, I decided it wouldn't be hard to hook up. Following the instructions carefully, I connected the router to my DSL modem, ran the cat 5 cable to the router and connected my computers adapter to the router, powering the modem and router on and off as directed by the instructions. After completing this I started the computer, clicked on my browser.....and got a blank page! No internet connection. So I checked all the cable connections, made sure the power was on on the modem and router, rebooted and tried again.. Still nothing.

My IP requires a static address and password, with gateway, dns, subnet address, domain name and host name, which is configured on my computer now.
My guess is that the router is not configured for this (and won't pass through and pick up the information from the adapter in my computer) In the instructions it gives a website to connect to to do the configuring but if I can't get connected how do I configure the router?
It seems to me that there should be some way of configuring the router from this end without having to connect to a website, but I'm darned if I know what it is.

Do I need to reconfigure my adapter to pick up the router signal?

I removed the cable running between the router and computer, plugged it into the modem and got instant internet access, which is what I'm using to type this.

I need to get this running before I tackle the wireless part....putting a computer in another part of the house and hooking to the internet through the router.

Like I said, although I've read most of the posts on this forum, and followed a lot of the links to some very good information, I know very little about routers and adapters and such. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Ben

Welcome to AT Network Forum.

Connect the DSL Modem to the WAN port of the Router and plug the computer to a Regular port.

If your computer TCP/IP is configured manually with static IP while directly connected to the Modem, these parameters are compatible with the Router's default settings.

Write down the parameters and change the setting in the TCP/IP menus to Auto obtain IP DNS etc.

The links in this page would show you how the TCP/IP menus look, http://www.ezlan.net/Installing#verify

Once your TCP/IP is set to Auto, start the Internet Browser and log to the Router menus (instructions in the Router's manual).

In the Router choose Static settings (The DSL PPPOE settings are not for Static IP) of the WAN side (Internet) and insert the ISP parameters in the menus.

As for Wireless configuration this might help.

Thank you JackMDS...that is exactly what I needed. While I was waiting, I went to DLink's website and read their faq's. Got basically the same answer you gave. I thought it might be something like that but just didn't have a clue where to look.

Thanks again, Ben

Forgot to tell you Jack...I'd already read the pages you have in your links on some other posts you'd helped. It's just the uncertainty and the small details that make me stub my toe.

For any other person that's as dumb as I am...the address you're supposed to go to when installing the DLink 524 isn't on the web, but on the chip inside of the router. When I found that out it cleared up a lot of things.

Thanks again, Jack. I really appreciate the help.
