I've just imaged my XP partition onto a SCSI drive, which apprently went fine. However, I am now unable to boot all the way into windows UNLESS the original IDE drive ia also connected to the system. If it is not, the boot screen stops just before the welcome message, refusing to go any further.

I'm guessing that this has to do with boot.ini perhaps, but I'm unsure how to properly modify it. The SCSI drive is ID#4 on an Adaptec 19160 in PCI slot #1.

The original boot.ini reads: "multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS". I tried to change this to: "multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(0)\WINDOWS", with no luck and I'm unsure about the syntax, so it seems pointless to change it further before I've sought some assistance.

Any idea what's happening here?

I do not know how to edit the file in question; If you could image it again, try these steps here. Sysprep

This is well known. The OS (actually the registry) remembers the serial number of the disk in each drive letter. When you take the old disk out, there is no C:. the system looks in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WIndowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Userinit to find the userinit program. Since it normally contains C:\WINNT\system32\userinit.exe, and there is no C: drive, it fails to find the program.

Solution: remove the path from this entry, leaving only userinit.exe. Since it is on the PATH, it will be found.

Do this when booting successfully with the old disk in the system. I had to do it once via remote registry editing from another computer on a LAN :)
