I have a linksys router. It had WPA on it and one computer was working fine the other could connect but couldn't get an IP.

I decide to make the network unsecured, the one having problems is now ok, connects gets an IP no problem. The one that was working without a problem now has issues. If I reboot it it will connect, it shows excelent signal quality then all of the sudden it will disconnect from the network and when I try to reconnect it fails to connect even though it has a nice signal.

What is going on? Why would it connect without a problem when the network was secured yet not work at all when it's unsecured? It's on the same channel and everything.

Has anyone had this kind of issue and found a fix for it? It's just discouraging when something that is supposed to work just will not.

Check the IP address on the two computers by bring up a command window and entering "ipconfig /all". It's possible that the DHCP server on the router assigned the same IP address to both computers for some reason, causing contention.

Which model of Linksys router is this? Are you using stock or third party firmware? Do you have the latest version?

I don't know what settings/configuration you have made to the router, but try resetting it to factory default settings, then enter only the minimal settings (enough to get you connected to the internet) and see if the problems go away.

They weren't getting the same IP. So anyway I changed the network back to encrypted and the computer that was having trouble with it being unencrypted connected and got an IP no problem. Does anyone know why in the world a computer would have trouble connecting to an unencrypted network yet can connect flawlessly to an encrypted one?

I reinstalled the software for the linksys wireless card and changed the encryption to wpa tkip and now the one that wasn't able to get connected got connected just fine. I really hope it continues without problems but I'm still interested in an explaination as to why a computer cannot connect to an unencrypted network, yet has no issue with an encrypted one.
