I have been trying to figure this out all day.

I just installed Windows 2000. I know I might be behind the times, but I dont think my computer has what it takes to handle Windows XP just yet.

Any case, installation was all done, and everything seems ok. But there's no sound. I checked to see if the sound card driver was working, and it was. I have a Creative Labs Soundblaster Live Value card. Whenever I try to play an mp3 on Winamp, no sound comes out. The display on Winamp seems to play the mp3 file for a second, and then it stops / freezes (the program, not computer). So I downloaded the latest driver from creative.com in hopes that it would solve the problem. When I tried to install it, it told me that it couldn't detect a Soundblaster card in my system, and terminated the install program.

I had Windows98 before on the system yesterday and the sound was working fine. I formatted the drive, and did a clean install of Windows 2000 Pro, and now I get this.

Any suggestions? It's 4:20 AM and I'm dead tired.

Thanks in advance,
-Brian.

Strange indeed. My older computer has a SB Live! Value card and Win2k Pro and I haven't had a problem with it so far. I would definately check the Microsoft Windows Help Database. Believe it or not, they have some great info and solutions to problems, common or rare.

Did you install the original Creative drivers for the SBLive?

Creative's update drivers only check for the previous drivers, not the actual hardware.

I'd start by uninstalling the card, physically removing the card, and then removing all traces of Creative in the registry. Then, download the latest drivers from Creative and have them unpacked and ready. Install the hardware and boot up, and install the drivers when asked. I had similar issues with a Creative Audigy and W2K, but I finally beat it into submission. :)

Should I just look into getting another sound card? I was looking through Creative's website and it makes no mention of Windows2000 compatibility, whereas some of the other cards do.

This is driving me insane. I just tried re-installing Windows, removing the physical card itself, etc. I removed the drivers, and then when I reboot Windows reinstalls them, and still no sound.

Another suggestion was for me to just upgrade to Windows XP.

Thanks for the responses.. please keep them coming.

You can turn all the eyecandy off in XP and it will come pretty close to system resource use in Windows 2000 Pro, which makes sense because it pretty much is the same animal.

As far as the sound goes, I have an Audigy XGamer and it runs fine in both Windows 2000 and XP. I had to use the Damn CD to install the drivers (the ones on the Creative site are simply UPDATES) in both Operating systems though. If you go into control panel and look at sound devices can you see the audigy as an audio output source? If not then I wouldn't think its installed properly.
