Need Help With Windows XP Installation on Notebook

Hey,

I'm trying to install Windows XP on a notebook with 48MB of RAM. Windows XP installer doesn't let me do this, it says I need 64MB and then it quits.

Yes I already know that it would perform crappy on it, but I'm not actually going to "use" that computer, so NO FLAMING of me. It's just going to act as a bridge between my wired and wireless network. Note that my wireless network consists of only one notebook, not including this crappy one. I will get an AP later on.

Since I only have 2 PCMCIA 802.11b NICS, and I've already tried getting a PCI or USB one for my desktop, I must use my crappy notebook.

How would I install WinXP on this system with less than 64MB? I know it can be done as I've heard of it, but I can't seem to find out how from anywhere.

Thanks,
Brandon

Silly question, but why do you need to use XP?
I'm pretty sure that you could do the same thing using 2K and that would install properly.

Are you trying to install through windows? If so, try booting off the CD and installing like that.

It still won't work whether booting with the CD or in Windows.

And I currently have Windows 2000 on it right now, but it does not have network bridging. So if you can find me a free program that'll allow bridging, then I'd appreciate that too, but right now, a definate workable solution would be getting Windows XP to work, since it has bridging built in.

If by bridging you mean routing, well yes Win2k does have it built it. It's called Internet Connection Sharing. I'm still not sure what your trying to do though.

Ok, this is what I'm trying to do.

I have a main computer. It's my desktop, and I have my cable modem directly conencted to it. This computer is connected to a switch using a wire...not wireless. Connected to this switch are other desktop computers taking internet being shared from my main computer. Also connected is a notebook I have. This notebook is connected to the wired LAN through the same switch.

Also in this notebook is a PCMCIA 802.11b adapter. It's for the wireless network. "Connected" to this computer with another wireless card is my other notebook. I'm trying to get the internet from my main computer to my good notebook.

The problem is I can't use the Internet Connection sharing on my crappy notebook becasue it requires that I use the IP 192.168.0.1, and that IP is already being used by the main computer which is sharing.

Once you setup ICS in Win2k and it reboots it will have 192.168.0.1 set as its IP address. But you can change it (I suggest using 192.168.1.1) and that should force it to dish out 192.168.1.x addresses through the wireless NIC. I don't know how well this will work though. Your setting yourself up for all kinds of IP conflicts once the other PCs try to renew their addresses. There are other programs out there that let you do routing but I don't know of any personally. You can also install Linux on the laptop and do this too. Even then your best bet would be to sell the laptop and get an Access Point.

This will do what you need...

Plug it into your switch, and set it for Ad-Hoc mode. Your laptop (wireless) will then be bridged to the wired network, and then be able to get to the cable modem through ICS.

You should be able to find one for about $100
