Need help with Windows Media Player 10

thestain

Senior member
I get an error message from Windows whenever I try to view any on line presentation with Windows media player. I cannot view with Internet Explorer, but can sometimes view with Firefox by moving the error message to bottom of the screen.

If I click on the Windows has encountered a problem, I lose the presentation completely.

I have tried contacting Microsoft in India and in New Brunswick to no avail.

Windows Media Player 10 simply will not work right.

I have Windows XP Home with SP1 on my Sony Vaio PC

This is for my dads computer. He did not have his firewall working right or something and in spite of having Panda and spybot and adaware all working and updated.. his computer got pretty infected, mostly with adware where a couple ads for spyware protection or something like it seemed to take over his machine.

He got frustrated, backed up his important files and re installed his Windows XP with SP1 program.. since that time Windows Media Players 9, 10 and 11 will not reliably work.

1) Media Player cannot contact the site..
2) Media Player is not recognized by the site
and usually 3) an error message to the extent.. could not connect to the site.. or something like it.. just tried to recreate, but it would not connect to the site.

Thanks!

Is the problem solely with streaming video, or do you have issues with local files as well?

Have you tried disabling the firewall?

Why are you not using SP2?

First install SP2.
Second install WMP11
(2a. get all those critical updates)
Third get CCCP (combined community codec pack)
Fourth ...ditch WMP for somthing better like Media Player Classic (which come with CCCP)
Fifth Profit

Your router may have issues with multicast. I know mine would just plain shut off whenever that protocol was used, so I disabled it and used TCP only (deep in the Windows media networking options). A router firmware update fixed it.
