need help with win98

Heres the deal- A system file on my friend's system, winsvrc.exe(or a variation thereof) got deleted, and a lot of apps need it to run. How can we copy the file from the 98 cd (I assume its inside a .cab file)without having to reinstall windows? Thanks much

Here are 3 ways to do it.
Open a DOS window and use the command "extract". Type extract /? to find out the syntax. Look into the Win98 folder on your CD and list all the CAB files. Your missing file is in one of the CAB files.

You can also run Setup on the CD to reinstall / repair your Windows setup.

You can also go to a friend's PC running the same version of Win98 that you run and then copy the file to a CD or send it to your email address as an attachment.

Redneck, Talon's right. Your friend picked up the Navidad virus. If he has a clue where it may have come from he should notify that person, as it's likely he/she doesn't even know they sent it. Check out the Symantec page Talon linked to.

FYI winsvrc.exe does not exit, and that's the problem. A registry edit from the virus points every executable on your system to this non-existant file, and viola you have a non-functioning system.
