so far i have tried wingate, sygate and the built-in ICS that comes with SE, and i liked the last by far. is there a way to add this capability to the win98 first edition? the one i am currently using as the client has 98 first edition on it, but using the this setup for about a week it would make much more sense to make it the server instead. and i cant find the damned SE disk :(

i THOUGHT that plain vanilla 98 had an option called "enable IP forwarding" that you could find in network properties...and that it would act like ICS...but something tells me that i'm confused here. though its worth a look

otherwise, you're stuck with third party routing software.

hmmm so is IP fowarding a NAT utility of some sort? as you can tell i am really reluctant to install any third party software :( i could care less about the server part, but dont like the idea of loading a client background applet...

Brotherman, if you could find a NAT server for Win98, that might do it. Unfortunatly, I'm not sure many exist, due to ICS in Win98SE.

There is GnatBox, but that requires a stand-alone PC of the 386 class.

alright, i somehow managed to fix it by running only the server app of sygate (which is what i really wanted to achieve in the first place), but somehow network neighborhood aint working... is it possible ICS could incidentally disable microsoft networks file sharing from the client side? i could acess files fine from the server side, very bewildered.

the reason i wanted to use ics instead of sygate was i didnt wanna load up any background apps on the client (which is my main computer now)

ICS is notoriously finicky. Everyone complains about it. I myself had it working fine then it just quit working. I tried everything to get it back including completely reinstalling all networking and ICS. Nothing would bring it back. These apps use very little resources and installing ICS is the same as if not worse than installing a third party NAT. Do yourself a favor and just install something like Winproxy. A little more difficult to set up than ICS but once you have it working it runs completely attention free.

I gave yah a solution BrotherMan. :)

When I was networking my comps I tried all types of things. ICS was the best. Very simply to set up also. Only problem was that not all my of games supported NAT. Red Alert 2 for example, wouldn't play on the internet if ICS was enabled so before playing I'd have to disable it (if possible).

well no complaints so far, the client seems to chug along happily except i cant send/receive files on my msn messenger, something i could live with. but not being able to use file sharing kinda bites.
