Need help with Win2000 Profiles, desperate!

Okay...this is kinda funky - but here goes. I always use the default Administrator account for Win2000, but just about 30 minutes ago when I tried to log on - the whole profile was empty, like I had just installed or something. So I'm still on the 'Administrator' account, just my settings have all been taken out. I check the 'Documents and Settings' folder in C:\ and see the 'Administrator' folder, but there is also an 'Administrator.bak' folder - so I assume all my old stuff was backed up. I still don't know why the OS backed up my admin profile, but I checked the 'Administrator.bak' folder, and I can see that all my old settings are there: ie. star menu, programs, desktop shortcuts, favourites etc. So I assumed I would just need to delete the 'Administrator' folder that was created for some reason, and rename the 'Administrator.bak' back to 'Administrator. I relogged on, but no such luck, still an empty profile with none of my previous customizations/programs. What I need to know is how to reactivate the profile - I'm sure I explained it pretty thorough so I just need pretty direct instructions. I have the whole profile backed up, so I'm assuming it is retrievable. Any help would be VERY appreciated.

Thanks a bunch!

For everyday use, create another User account, in adm group if you wish, and save default Adm account for troubleshooting, should your everyday account become corrupted. You're lucky the default Adm account can't be deleted, else you might not have been able to log on and fix things unless you've got another adm account handy.

Ok, lets see if I can help. I've seen NT4 do this numerous times, but this is the first I've heard of Win2K doing it.

Basically it renames your profile to whatever.bak .... so if you were logging in as admninstrator , your profile is now administrator.bak, and when you log in it will create a blank new profile called administrator. You can't just rename the old profile back -- that doesn't work. You can, however, copy stuff from the .bak profile to your current one. You'll have to remap any mapped drives and recreate the printers, but most other stuff works ok.

Incidentally, you should not be logging into the system as the admin. Create an account for yourself and ad it to the administrator group on the local machine......

Hmm...I'm not sure I see the diference between: renaming 'Administrator.bak' to 'Administrator' and 'Administrator' to'Administrator.bak', and copying files from 'Administrator.bak' over 'Administrator'.

As far as the desktop goes, I've been able to restore that. But I can't seem to get my accounts from my Outlook Express, or ICQ, or some other programs that had the login information cached into the software. How do you restore these type of things?
