Buy philosophy is to get the best I can for the money which in this case is $500 ($400 much better)...

Don't need lots of "features" per se, just good, useable functionality and a sharp, clear picture. Camera will be primarily used for filming family activities (kids swinging from the chandeliers, etc)... including about 50% outdoor activities.

I want to easily be able to store the movies in some digital media format that will be around for a while (assuming DVD here) and not some obscure company specific storage medium that will be "out of date" soon...

Please help. Any suggestions are appreciated...

I just got the Panasonic GS-120. It was camcorderinfo.com's best for under 800. It is a 3 ccd chip model, so the picture quality is very good. It's digital image stabilizer isn't the greatest, and the lcd kinda sucks unless you look at it from a perfect angle. But so far so good. It's only 2 weeks old, so I am a newbie. I paid $525 including shipping.
