Hey all.

I have set up a VNC server on my Windows 2000 box, but I can't seem to connect to it from my Linux boxes. I enter the IP address and password, but nothing happens. The console window I launch vncviewer from shows this:

[electrode@tetrahedron electrode]$ vncviewer
VNC server supports protocol version 3.3 (viewer 3.3)
VNC authentication failed

I know I entered the password correctly. I have restarted the VNC server about 10 times. What's the deal?

this might be a two part problem, first check from a win box if you can log in to vnc to the server.

i used to have problems with VNC from the 8.0 mandrake cd, you might want to try a different version, ever heard of tightvnc? its smaller and supposed to have better compression for slower networks, i currently have it running on my win2k server and its nice.

Thanks for the advice.

Strange you mention the version that comes with Mandrake 8.0, since that's what I'm using at the moment.

I think VNC connects on ports in the 5000 range, I am assuming that you have those ports open/unblocked.
typically 5900, 5901 and 5902.

Thanks for that advice too.

I now have it working. I got a new binary package from the VNC site and that fixed everything.
