Need Help with Video...

Hey Folks...

I've done a bunch of system builds in my time & never had a problem like this...I've been doing cable mods (sleeving) all week & finished up last night...

I go to plug everything in & I can't get any video...at all...

I don't know how this happened, but somehow, one of the pins on my Hitachi SATA drive broke off...This is my 1st SATA drive, so I can only guess that a broken pin would result in the drive not working...but it still fires up...but no video...

So I unplugged the SATA drive & plugged in my ATA HD...Still no video...I've checked all other connections & everything else seems to be working fine.

My guess at this point is, somehow & I have no idea how, but my video card died.

I'm not sure what else to try at this point...I'm hoping someone out there has a suggestion or two...Or has experienced the same thing...Again, I've built several systems in my time, but never had anything like this happen.

Clear the CMOS.
(remember to remove the power cord and let it sit for several minutes)

As for the HD, it would depend on what pin is missing.
You may want to leave the HD unplugged after clearing
the CMOS for testing purposes.

Try booting to a WIN98 bootable floppy diskette. If it boots to this, probably nothing wrong with your video card.

Thanks for the replies...I was able to grab another pc & set up the video card...Video came up immediately, so my card must have died, which is pretty shocking to me, since the card's still new...I'm going to RMA the card.

As for the HD, the 1st pin on the left is the one that broke off...Somehow, in the process of connecting the SATA cable, the pin was severely bent...In my efforts to straighten it back, it broke off...

I was able to hear the drive spin up, but do you think I'll be able to retrieve the data?...

No, I bought the A8N-SLI-Deluxe because I wanted to upgrade anyway...

I tested everything last night & it was working fine...Rebooted the system several times to make sure things were all good...Seemed clean...

I just put everything in the case & fired it back up...Took a couple tries, but it booted...Had video long enough for a total of 3 reboots...Just as it was getting ready to load XP, it rebooted itself...Now there's no video...I didn't touch anything...

I hope to hell my vga card isn't somehow shorting the PCIe slot on these boards...I haven't experienced this type of video problem before...Card was working perfectly on Tuesday...Didn't do a damn thing to it...

So, I had video last night & I had video today for a few minutes...Now I don't have any video at all...Checked all the connections several times...Everything else appears to be working fine...

I could use some help here from the experts...

Is this a vga card issue?

FYI: I was planning on upgrading to a 7800 GT anyway, so I'm probably going to order one this week...If the X800XL is defective, I hope it didn't fry the PCIe slot on the board...

Update: I doubt it's the video card...I bought a new BFG 7800 GT OC tonight & had the same results...

I'm wondering if my SATA HD (now w/ soldered pins) shorted the board somehow...

I reset the CMOS 3 times & nothing changed...Only the bare essentials are installed (VGA Card, RAM, CPU, PSU & ATA HD)...Yanked everything out of the case & put it on a static free mat...

I plan on returning the MB & getting a new one tomorrow...

Any thoughts / suggestions in the meantime?
