Need Help with Very strange problem...can't delete files from kazaa!

Hello all...here's my situation:

I have been using Kazaa Lite for a few months with no problems. THe other day, I was downloading some things (I usually download all my search results and sort threw them when they are downloaded) and when I was cleaning up the garbage, I ran accross 4 files (20K each) that I couldn't delete. Needless to say, they are still on my computer in the shared folder. I removed Kazaa, checked all the regisrty setting to make sure there were no traces of the program or any kind of crap in the "RUN" key. Then I attempted to remove the files with a few different file shredder programs...no luck...I booted into safe mode (Win2000) and tried to wack them that way...no luck...I wrote a batch file to delete them on startup (using the RUN key)...no luck...I have NAV with the latest defs, no sign of any virus on scans...when I try and delete the files in regular Windows 2000 mode, nothing happens, and I mean nothing...no error...no pop-up window that says the files are in use....just nothing. When I try and look at the properties, I get a message that the "propeties for this item are not available"...the other thing is, the files seemed to rename themselves...they had 2 different names, on rebottm they named themselves the same thing...I did find references to the old file names in the registry, but I wacked those keys and nothing seems to be recreating itself on reboots (which seems to be good)...the only thing that I can think of that I didn't try yet is buying NTFS-DOS to access the files in dos mode and deleting them that way...by the way, I tried to attrib them in command line mode, but they had no attribues according to the error I got...the file name is something crazy like "Pokemon Limp Bizkit Brittney Spears" and some other random profanity...has anyone run into this before???? When I get home, I am gonna try and run some of the symantec virus removal tools, but that's gonna be a shot in the dark...Please help...thanks in advance!!!! bob

It sounds like you have got Win32.Worm.Benjamin. Just a guess though. If your NAV wasn't up to date at the time it might have gotten through. There is also this SITE that talks about it too. The reason I think this is your problem is that I remember reading somewhere about it that it renames its self with those names you have listed...or least I remember something about Britney Spears having to do with it.

Good luck

(just posted this in another thread, but it applies here too)

sometimes explorer itself gets a hold of a file and won't let go, try this method:

close all programs

open a command prompt window (a dos window), and cd to the folder with the file (or folder)

do a control-alt-delete to get the task manager, and shutdown the 'explorer.exe' process.

you'll be left with just the dos prompt window...go back to it, and delete the file (del filename.mpg)

then in the task manager, in the applications tab, hit 'new task' and type in explorer.exe and you'll be back to normal

I resolved the issue...Here's what happened: I didn't actually have a virus or a trojan...I had accidently downloaded some of the files that are related to a virus, but I didn't have the full blown virus...the files had very long names and somehow screwed up the Master Files Table...so, NT didn't think they were actually files...there was no way to get rid of them, and I mean no way...I tried everything...even though the files weren't hurting anything on my system, the fact that something was on my computer that I didn't want really bothered me...so, I backed up all of my data (except the bogus files), stopped all services that were linked to files on that infected drive, formatted the drive, and restored...it was an easy process that took about 15 minutes...now the drive is fine...thank the Lord that the files were on a non system drive or I would have been screwed...

Has anyone come up with a solution to this problem? The same thing just happened to me. HUGE filename must be screwing it up, because I get all sorts of messages in DOS that the filename is not found. Unfortunately, this IS on my C drive. And I'll be pretty pissed if I have to start from scratch. At least I have a temporary way to back stuff up right now.

If I boot to another partition, do you think I can delete it? I have to reinstall XP on a second partition on the machine (my primary is 2K). I should be able to see it then. Do you think I'll be able to delete it?

Well, I tried that. At first I just tried using wildcards, but it refused to recognize the file. Then I typed in what I thought was the entire thing and it still won't recognize it. I'll give it again. Maybe I had a typo. It's four lines of text, after all.

Haha, I've had this problem somewhat similar. But I got rid of it.

Let me explain what happened, and How i fixed it.

First off, I remember downloading a no-cd patch or something, it worked. I did other things, and I noticed on Kazaa, someone downloaded an "Xbox Emulator" from me. Considering I own an Xbox, and Have no need for something that doesn't exist. I just shrugged it off, and thought it was a bug with Kazaa. I also noticed I was sharing 74 files! Considering, I had nothing in there (Deleted the CD thing shorty after), I have my own Downloads folder which is where all my Kazaa stuff goes and comes from, I usually move the stuff out, to a corresponding folder, so no one really could upload off me. I made sure my sharing folder was my Download folder, and I was still sharing 74 files, after even after closing and restarting the problem, and even rebooting.

A bit puzzled, I decided to investigate further. I did a search for "Xbox" using the well, search feature. I found the folder it was coming from.... C:/Windows/Media. And what do you know, theres 74 files, nearly 50 or so .exes, with "Gamecube Emulator", "Xbox Emulator", and a whole bunch of other .exe that have a "Hello Kitty" Icon, and quite small in size. I decided to delete them, which was fine, till about 10 minutes later, they appeared again. I was a bit puzzled. I noticed on the C:/Windows folder, it had a weird .exe of some type, with the "Hello Kitty" Icon, with a file name, entirely different from the others. I tried to Delete it, but it wouldn't let me. It said "Program is running, or disk is full". I knew my disk wasn't full, because I had over 10 gigs of space left. I couldn't delete it, then I opened up Task Manager, that .exe was running. I closed the .exe, and succesfully deleted the file, I went back into C:/Windows/Media and Deleted those, and they never came back.

So now, I was still sharing some files (The Real Windows media files), I opened up regedit, looked for kazaa, noticed a key, that linked to C:/Windows/Media. Deleted that key, and I was no longer sharing those files, and they have not come back again.

Well, thats my story, I just wrote this whole thing, and then I noticed you had fixed it.

Keep tryimg from your DOS pompt Crimson. The long file names are a dirty trick some play on Kazaa, WinMX etc.

A friend of mine also told me that you can delete the long file names by using the Kazaa file explorer. I never tried that, but it is supossed to work.

I have had the long file name problem before with kazaa. The easiest way I found to get rid of them is to copy all the files you want to keep out of the directory of the long file. Then go to that directory in dos or the cmd prompt. Once there just do a del *.* If that doesn't work then you have run into another random problem. I have had Kazaa files with messed up permissions so that even the admin could not delete them. To fix that you have to log in as a super user/admin and take control of the files.

Oh my god. I was able to use the Kazaa explorer to delete it. Strange, since I realized the problem when I couldn't remove it from the traffic screen. I assume the Kazaa program couldn't handle it, too. Thanks everyone!
