Need help with USB 2.0 performance with peripherals...

We have recently purchased an Adaptec 2.0 USB card to go with a system to help out with the USB 2.0 performance since scanning with it would bog down. The system has onboard USB 2.0 but it seems there is an issue with using the onboard USB 2.0 on the system.....to where it will bog the system down.
Since plugging in the scanner to the PCI USB 2.0 card, we are still having problems but not as bad.... Should I go ahead and disable the onboard USB and just use the card or should I use the USB onboard for the mouse / other peripheral too?
What way can I get the best performance out of it?

i do a lot of scanning, and have owned three different scanners (all higher end hp scanners)

most recently, i got fed up with intermittent problems with the USB connection to the scanner (sometimes it was recognized, sometimes not,), i finally bought a scsi card and cable, and run the scanner of thscsi port...fantastic! works reliably, works faster, never screws up..

i don't know what it is with scanners and usb, but i have had trouble with that combination that i have never been able to figure out, and ever since i switched to scsi, i've been very pleased.
