I replaced the HD in an socket A board (ASUS A7N266-VM/AA) and reinstalled XP with SP2 but the enhanced USB controller isn't there. I used the same nForce platform drivers that I installed 6 years ago and the Device Manager is clean - no flags. Everything works fine except the USB is 1.1 instead of 2.0.

All Google searches say to install SP2, and I know that, but it's already installed and I see nothing available from MS updates to suggest a fix. I haven't DL'd SP3 because right now all I have is dial up where the computer is located, and because SP2 should have taken care of that.

XP and USB 2.0 worked fine before the drive was replaced. I had this problem with XP before in other computers, and removing and reinstalling USB in the Device Manager would usually work but not this time.

Any ideas??

FWIW:
XP1800
512 megs of RAM (adding another stick this week because it's cheapr than it was 6 years ago.
80g WD Blue
CDRW
On board video and sound
350W PS with voltages within 5% of normal

Reinstall the motherboard drivers but go into safe mode first and delete the current USD device drivers.

If you spend any amount of time online then i suggest you log in over night and get SP3 and all other updates for XP.

Are you 100% sure that the board supports USB 2.0? I had the non-AA version of this board and don't remember it having USB 2.0. Also, if you check out this webpage, it also mentions that the board does not support USB 2.0:

Thanks for the tip! I didn't find any A7N266 product info on the ASUS page when I checked (it's that old) but you are correct. I Googled the specs and found the same info the \AA board - USB 1.1 only. The USB seemed MUCH faster before the reinstall but I never benchmarked it because it seemed to work fine. Until about an hour ago I was 100% certain it had 2.0, but it must have been an ID10T error on my part since Enhanced USB is not possible. I haven't posted a PC question here in months... man I feel dumb.

On a positive note, since I no longer have a to "fix" the USB problem the rebuild is done!

PCI USB 2.0 cards are cheap if you have a slot for one.

Everything is on board so there's plenty of slots available. I would install one in a second if it was mine but I built it for a friend back in December '03 and forgot it was a USB 1.1 board. She doesn't want a card so I guess she is okay with the slow transfers... either that or she never uses the USB.

Thanks!
