group of boys average height 170cm, standard deviation 8cm.
group of girls average height 160cm, standard deviation 8cm.
will the standard deviation of the 2 groups together be greater than 8cm??

thanks guys this hw is due in an hour =P

I *think* it's greater?

since the spread of the data will be bigger? but that will also change the mean...

actually there are 182 boys and 142 girls,

i *think* it will be smaller since more boys??

ahhhh.... i need help!!!

that's what i am thinking too....

is Standard Deviation the "spread of the data", or "deviation from the mean"????

The standard deviation is the average distance from the mean.
Since it's a modulus quantity (doesn't matter whether distance is + or -) I think it will increase. My stats is somewhat rusty though.

thanks guys 🙂

I just submitted the hw... I put greater

I have falling a bit behind in this distance course, got to catch up a bit now 😉
