Hi people,

I saw Polk Audio R30-Black spekaers are 50% off for $199 a pair at Circuit CIty ($399 normally). Anyone have these speakers? I couldnt find many reviews on these other than the circuit city, so just wanted to learn about them before I bought them, I am going to connect them to an external subwoofer so the bass isnt really important for me.

Here is the link: Polk Audio R30

Thanks.

I'm not a fan of floor speakers because they require the listener to be at a certain height for perfect treble response.

If it's for a home theatre, and you're going to be sitting at a couch or in some other low position, then I'd second the above opinion.

If they're going to be computer speakers, go with a multi-piece set with those little cube mid-range things.

That's just my opinion. This is up to you, and you can't go by someone else's opinion. Some people like different things. Personally, I like a lot of bass and treble with a low amount of midrange response. That may not be you. Movies should particularly emphasize the lows and mids, but music needs the treble for the percussion.

Dude, buy them and save your receipt.

Edit: Musicians such as myself, in my limited experience, like a good high-range response. If this is you, check the frequency response on the box. Make sure it goes at least up to 20 Khz. Anything less will sound muddy to you.

Edit II: Sorry, didn't read the link. They look great... 45-24Khz.

Unless you pay a lot of money, buying speakers at a store is going to get you speakers with shoddy drivers and crappy crossovers. If you buy certain brands online you can get good drivers but most have crappy crossovers(if you don't want to do a lot of work, this is your best opion). If you DIY you can get very nice speakers for a very nice price.

$400 is a ripoff for those speakers. i paid $400 for my R50s back in august and last week the R50s were $300 at fry's. $199 they might be good tho.

not everyone has tools, space, or woodworking/soldering skill to make speakers

hey guys, thanks for the responses, well i understand you better now, well i already purchased them, and bought them with my msn dollars, i needed to use them and didnt have anything else to spend them on. they have free shipping, so i ll just keep the receipt, and if i dont like them, i'll just return them :)

time for the second question, do you think i should use these with my pc or hometheater? I thought 100 watts per each of these speakers was pretty good with 24-45 KHZ, so I was thinking they would probably sound a lot better than the average home theater speakers. I am going to get a 200 Watt Polk Audio subwoofer as well, and a good receiver to set a nice home theater unless if you guys say go with the PC :)

Well thanks for all the advice again :)

Xiety.

They're going to be ok for $199, will probably have reasonable bass, but I wouldn't expect much sound quality wise.

I got another question, should I get a Polk Audio subwoofer and receiver or can I go with different brands? Does it make any difference in sound? And any suggestions for a receiver and a center speaker would be great, thanks guys.

you can get which ever you want. woofers don't need matching so much as mids and especially tweeters do

you crap all over bought speakers (and the best brands generally can't be had online or are the same price) then say DIY is the greatest thing since sliced bread. heck, i'm willing to do the work but i have nothing else else so no, its STILL not my best option

I said that with DIY you can get very nice speakers for a very nice price. I say nothing about work involved and I even said that if you don't want to work you can get some of the cheap quality brands online.
Did you read what I italicized and subsequently bolded?

you said, "if you don't want to do a lot of work, this is your best opion."
so yes, you did say something about work involved.

you also said, "If you buy certain brands online you can get good drivers but most have crappy crossovers."
which mentions nothing about "cheap quality." apparently you can't read what you wrote.

not like you didn't leave out the major factor of tools, workspace, and woodworking/electronics building skill. theres a lot more than just raw "work" to building a set of speakers you'd be proud to have sitting in your living room.

if you're getting polk fronts i would suggest getting a polk center as well, as they'll be the closest voice match you can find. otherwise sounds will change as they move from one speaker to the other

I'm sorry if I offended anybody by saying that DIY speakers give you the best bang for you buck. I didn't realise people would be freaking out over that advice. Some people read way too much into the meanings of my posts.
Do whatever floats your boat, but it doesn't even matter because you already bought the speakers.

Ever heard of google?

Anyways, since I just saw the same deal on techbargains, I looked up the r30s. The only reviews they had were on the r40s, and apparently the bass sucks, so you do need a sub.

i didn't take offense but you're making it a lot simpler than it seems and when i point that it requires more than simply being willing to build speakers you jump all over me like i'm some run of the mill idiot. and then make claims that aren't even true!

ofcourse i heard of google :D well you know I trust AT members more than most of the review sites as I am sure most companies employ people just to write those reviews on merchant sites :) thanks anyways.
