Need help with some terms relation to SMTP, spam & network security

GasX

Lifer
A number of terms are used ? seemingly interchangeably ? and I?m confused.

IP addresses are put on BLACK LISTS (list of IP address that are used to block incoming emails) often due to the following reasons.

Open Relay
Open Proxy
Multi-Stage Relay
Multi-Hop Relay
Single Stage Relay

My questions are as follows:

1. Are these all the same?

2. If not, what is the definition of each? I'd be happy to settle for a good website that explains this, but I have not been able to find one... 🙁

3. When a black list gives an IP for an "open relay" is the IP for the spammer or the person who mail server is being hijacked?

Finally, there are 2 other terms I often see but have yet to find a good explanation of what they are:

Smart Host
Zombie

Any help here would also be appreciated.

TIA 🙂
