Need help with science homework...

We just learned about newton's 3rd law, but i don't get how to do this question...

"Suppose you are playing hockey on a frozen pont with some friends when one of them presents a challenge. From the middle of the frozen pond, you are challenged to find a way to get to the ground at the edge of the pond without pushing or walking with your legs or arms. Assume the pond is nearly frictionless. What do you have with you that will help you get off the pond?"

question to solve: How would you move across the lake?

thanks a lot to any1 who tries to help or actually does it...😉

You have a hockey stick, since you are playing hockey. Throw the hockey stick in the opposite direction that you want to go.

Lets assume the hockey stick is 1.5 lbs. Lets also assume the person is 150 lbs. Thus if you could throw the stick at 10 miles per hour, you (by Newtons 3rd Law) would travel at 1 mile per hour in the opposite direction. Since we are ignoring friction on the pond, you will travel at 0.1 mile per hour for as long as you are on the pond. Thus eventually you will reach the edge.

oops it's not completely frictionless n/m

what if it is?

then you can keep blowing air in the opposite direction to propell you! otherwise you are gonna have ot propel something heavier.

As was mentioned throw stuff, but also have your friend through it back to you. Repeat until you reach the edge.

Wait until the pond melts... eventually your rotted corpse will float to the surface and beach itself on the shore. Or, you could do what dullard suggests, but in that case, the pond would have to be very very very very nearly frictionless.

However, if you want to have fun with your physics teacher... suggest that the pond be completely frictionless. If you were far enough from the shore, what effect would the coriolis effect have upon the skater? Would he ever reach the shore?

Right, just keep passing the puck back and forth keeping your back to the direction you want to go

blow, wave with your arms to create force, like swim through the air, leaning forward might even do it, just keep your balance after you almost fall forward.

Inhale from one direction, exhale in the other.

You will get there eventually.

Or you could thrown your hockey stick, take off various articles of clothing and throw those, cut off limbs and throw those, etc. etc.
