My internet was working great last night but his morning was hell for me...i couldn't connect to the internet at all.

I checked my cable modem and it was working fine so I then checked my router and voila! it didn't have any WAN address (ip address provided by cable modem).
So i changed every setting i can think of that might be causing the problem but still, it's not working. I even upgraded the firmware to the newest one.
The router is configured as a DHCP for 3 client machines and it doesn't have any problem giving out the right ip addresses (192.168.1.*).
So i tried releasing/renewing the router's WAN address but it couldn't get any from my cable modem.
Also tried cloning the MAC address of the NIC and static addressing.

I can connect to the internet when i directly connect my PC to the cable modem.

here's my specs:
Linksys befsr41 v2 w/ latest firmware
Toshiba cable modem
Win98 SE
ISP: attbi.com

when i didn't use my router, my Zone Alarm firewall detected this traffic:
INCOMING traffic direction from 12.233.249.99.client.attbi.com -- 2 occurances
INCOMING traffic direction from 12.233.159.124.client.attbi.com -- 2 occurances
INCOMING traffic direction from 12.233.230.209.client.attbi.com -- 2 occurances
ROUTED traffic direction from (ip above) -- one occurance

Is attbi not allowing a router to be in my home network, or somebody hacked the router (mac addr.), or just a low signal? help

A lot of cable modems cache mac addresses. This means they learn the mac address from the first device that is used to access it and stores this in their table. Try to go here http://192.168.100.1/ to see if this accesses your cable modem's internal webpage. See if you can find a mac address of the network card that is on your computer cached in the file. I am not sure if toshiba has a way to access it. I have a motorola sb4100 and this works for me.

This is why when you connect directly through to your pc it works. The cable modem probably has the mac of your network card in the cache. You can try turning the cable modem off for a few minutes and then turning it back on to see if this clears the cache. Otherwise, you can just call your cable company and ask them to clear your host because you have switch from your network card connection to your router.

I recommend that you clone your network card's mac on your linksys router. There is a tab under "advanced" that says "mac clone". You should enter the mac of your network card in this location. This will allow your to go between your router and network card without having to always call your cable company.

You can use "winipcfg.exe" to find out your nic's mac.

i just noticed today that the router's WAN link LEDs were not lighting.
the manual says the DIAG LED should light up (orange) when started but on mine, it lights up red. The other Link/Act LEDs don't light up at all.
So did the router's WAN port just died?

I've seen this problem twice. Both instances involved a crappy Com21 modem. It would lease an ip to a direct pc, but not to the WAN port of a router. Provisioned a diff modem and no more problem. Never seen it in reference to a Toshiba, but we just started installing Toshibas so I haven't had much experience with them. It's funny you posted because I was gonna mention the same problem. I'd like to know what causes this occurence. Both times I've seen this I was working with a Linksys router as well...wonder if that's the culprit?

You should at least have a link light on in WAN. Lighting red at power on is normal tho.

i went to my friend's and he has a Linksys router and a Linksys cable modem setup.
so we tried to swap my router with his router. once i plugged in the power, the WAN indicator LEDs light up but then dies after 5 seconds. the Link or Act LEDs should light up if it was working.

i'm trying to call linksys customer support but they put me on hold for more than 30 mins. until i hanged up.
so any more ideas on how to fix it?

Will your friend's router work at your house? Try resetting the router with a paper clip to see if that clears up your problem. Did you recently upgrade the flash? Can you still communicate with the router using 192.168.1.1? If so, you may try upgrading it to the latest flash. Linksys just released a new one to see if this clears up the problem with new software.
