Cameras with the lens that close to the flash are going to get red-eye, even with the red-eye reduction flash on. It's not necessarily the A70s fault, it's just a drawback of having a compact camera.
I haven't used my A70 on people very much (sounds like a threat!) but for removing red eye waaaay back in the day I would use Kai's Photo Soap. There might be some software that came with the camera that could alleviate it easily... I never bothered looking at it.
Some cameras have a hot shoe which will accept a separate flash. This move the flash further away from the lenses which reduces or eliminates redeye. There is not to much you can do about it with the A70 because it doesn't have a hot shoe. Try not taking pictures straight on at eye level to the subject. Take them from the side or a little down or up. It may help. Otherwise, you have to remove in software.
I have the A70, and I confirm that taking photos of people, you get the red eye effect. Reduction effect flash on or not...
I just use software to remove it. Any modern photoediting prog has this feature, so u choose.
