My current computer that I just built a week ago includes the following:

asus a8n-sli basic model
amd x2 4200 @ 2.4ghz
evga 7800gtx
corsair value 2gig
nec dvd writer
generic dvd
enermax 550watt

i'm having a problem wit the computer resetting during low load times. When I'm playing games the computer never resets, its only when I'm checking email or doing some word processing.

I looked at the pc probe and it shows 11.7 on the 12v and 4.9 on the 5v and 3.29 on the 3.3 and 1.28 on the vcore.

is there something wrong with the power supply or the wall outlet or my rig settup?

thanks for any help,

Nik

This may sound stupid, but if you're running 2 sticks of 1GB memory, try swapping their banks on your MB, stranger things have happened to me

Oh, and welcome to AT nikhenry

PC probe is crap. No offense to Asus, I love them but you can NOT trust software voltage monitors, they are useless. What temps are u running with cpu/mobo? Maybe ur X2 is overheating and thus shutting off.

If it was an overheating issue leegroves86, wouldn't the opposite be happening?

thanks, for all the replys, so far since installation the temps have never been above 44c and it idles around 36c with case temps of 36 . I tried a shake down of the case to make sure nothing was shorting out the power and I just went and bought a ups and still have these random reboots.

Kernel32: how do I chech the System log in the Event Viewer?

thanks again,

Nik

Your voltages seem to be in the ballpark even though the software hardware monitors are notoriously inaccurate - a DMM belongs in any computerists kit. Random reboots are usually PSU or RAM. Have you tried swapping RAM slots and/or running one at a time and/or testing your RAM with Memtest86 or Memtest86+ or the M$ memory testing utility?

It sounds like a virus to me. More than half of the computer users in the world contain illegal software licenses and download infectious content daily. I could be wrong, but this isn't uncommon to assume this sort of thing. A system restore would be your best option if you are absolutely sure that it isn't a hardware issure.

Check the event viewer by going to your desktop, right clicking onto My Computer, Manage, then you're going to have to click on the little plus to see all of the event viewer logs. Check System and Application to see if there are any errors right around the time your unit rebooted itself. If there are, Google said errors, if there aren't any, it's a hardware issue.

I was having random freezes just a few days ago. My voltages were really messed up within Asus Probe and a few other programs. You cannot be certain that those are your actual voltages without having them tested by a digital multimeter. John made a really good post a while back in July and said you should always test your PSU with a DMM. if you can get your hands on a DMM to rule out your power supply, that would be really good and it would save you some time in the future as well.

As others have noted, if you have ruled out hardware problems then it may be malware. Cool Web Search among others are known to cause reboots. TrendMicro.com is the current home of CWShredder that detects and removes known variants. I would also install and run several anti-spyware proggies (I have Adaware, Spybot, and the M$ antispyware progs installed) plus a deep AV scan with several different programs or use the free online scanners provided by Trend (Housecall) or Symantec along with your local AV program. Run these programs in safe mode wherever possible as the baddies have a harder time hiding in safe mode.

ok, i checked out the system log and found a couple of suspect items.
they list as a system error and have the description of:

Error code 100000d1, parameter1 00421d8c, parameter2 00000007, parameter3 00000001, parameter4 ba52d2e5.

I have no idea how to check into this further any help would be appreciated.

on a side note, I do run McAfee security center with updated definitions and I have a router firewall and software firewall. I checked for malware like said coolweb search and have found nothing. I even did a system restore back to when the computer was first put together.

I don't have access to a DMM, but I do have an extra 470watt power supply that came with the case if you think I should try and stick it in to rule out the powe supply.

thanks again,

Nik

well, I just got through memtest with zero errors, so now i'm down to swapping out the power supply with the spare. Do you think a 470watt with 18 amps on the 12volt will suffice for my setup?

thanks again,

Nik

i think it would be fine. you might as well try it. what have you got to lose?

as a side note, my new computer has been going through similar problems but it doesn't matter if it's heavy or light load. i've burned through two stock power supplies and i think the 3rd one is going out now, so that's why i just ordered a new Antec power supply. hopefully that solves all my problems - and yours.

I upped the voltage on the overclock so that the vcore is now at 1.33 and havn't had a problem. I think the vcore was dipping too low and causing the problem as I couldn't get prime95 to run with both cores, but now I can with the upped voltage i can run the large and small ffts test stable. The combined test however is still having problems. the cpu 0 will not be able to continue the test very long until it starts to have errors and stops the test. I will keep looking into swapping the powersupply out but I would like to stay with this power supply as I paid 80 bucks for it.
