Need help with RAID setup...

Hey M8's

Maybe a stupid question for some of you, but a new one for me. ..
I Just purchased a new P4 2.4ghz 800mhz fsb, P4800 deluxe board with Raid support, 2 maxtor ata 133 40 gig drives.
I plan on installing a linux system and turning this powerhouse into a new webserver.
Have assembled dozens of machines, worked on hundreds, but have never had the pleasure of looking at, or even working on a Raid system before. So this is something new to me. I'd like to do Raid 1.
Raid 1 is for mirroring if I am correct.. right?
Now here is my stupid question.. Do I set up a master and a slave, 2 masters, both cable select, or what is the deal?
I'd love to get this new machine up and running tomorrow, so any speady responses would be great.

Thanks for the help guys...

Welcome to the boards WhiteAngel,

Here is what I reccomend.

1. Take each drive and set them to Master. Have each connected with it's own cable to the MOBO.
2. Check in you BIOS and be sure the IDE channels are set to RAID. Banny will toggle between RAID and IDE.
3. Have everything plugged in and boot the PC. When it is booting, you will probably see something to the effect of RADI setup, fastbuild, etc. You will have to press a key to go into it. Just pay attention and you should see it.
4. RAID 0 is Striped (See's both drives as 1) and RAID 1 is Mirrored.

Hope this helps some, write back if you have more ?'s!

Thanks...

That helps some of my questions.
My board has PRI_RAID1 and SEC_RAID1.
Do I slap them on PRI_RAID1 and SEC_RAID1?

Thanks 4 the help,

Another question, hmmm. ok have one. 🙂
Linux. Does anyone know if the new Linux Redhat 9.0 will pick up and install the RAID automatically, or do I have to setup the RAID myself by mounting it. Might help save me some time reading..lol

yea listen to jbritt ....put them on seperate cables...putting them on the same can/will slow them down...i went raid 2 years ago and ill never go back 🙂

you can get away with a simple p1 133 for a webserver why waste all that power on that?

ps: not trying to be rude just wondering

Wanted to run linux.
P4 2.4ghz with HyperThread 800 mhz FSB gives me Dual Processor... Going to need that extra kick for the extra extensions I plan on running...
Besides, with the price of the hardware these days, why not 🙂

Machine only ran me $650 canadian. Contracts I already have lined up, pay off the machine, plus it's one big right off...

Have run into another prob though... Did the RAID1 setup.. seems to work. But when I start to install WinXP and Hit f6 for RAID dirvers. next window asks me for a driver from manufacturer. I didn't for one install an A drive because I didn't think I would need one. Not a prob, will rip one out of the half dozen machines I have laying around.
But as for the disk... Hmm is it on the CD that I recieved with my board? Could I rip those onto a floppy for install?
Asus P4800Deluxe.

Has anyone else run into this prob? and how did you overcome it?

ThanX and LAteRzz M8'Zz

WhiteAngel,

Unfortunatly, you are going to have to put a floppy in it for that driver. It's probably on the CD, but if not, go to ASUS's web site and they will have that driver available for download from the support page for that board.

What jbritt1234 said, I've got an Asus and the drivers are on the cd. Just navigate your way to the xp raid drivers, you'll find a program to run which will create a floppy for you for loading xp...
