Do i need the cable to be connected between my SB Audigy and Pioneer 10x DVD ROM directly (i believe its called digital audio/SPIDF cable) or is there another way to play digital sound of DVD movies though Power DVD? (ie does digital sound transfer through regular IDE channel to sound card?)

Thanks

the cable is only used when playing audio cd's, at least the only use I have found in many many years

if you're using xp look under properties of your dvd drive in device manager & make sure "enable cd digital....." is checked.
dvd> soundcard cable will then become redundant!

My fuzzy memory tells me it is the same -perhaps the setting is in a slightly different place.

The option to enable digital music is greyed out :(

maybe it needs the direct connection to be enabled?

Akaz,

Digital sound from DVD movies are encoded on the disc as data. The sound travels across the data bus just like the video does. The Audigy can decode the digital sound into 5.1 separate channels and send it out through your speakers. You need to have a 5.1 speaker setup to fully enjoy the 5.1 sound. First, a couple of questions. What type of speaker setup do you have? How does your Audigy connect to your speakers?

If you have an analog connection (3 two strand cables consisting of 1 front, 1 rear, 1 center/sub) from audigy to 5.1 speakers, you need to do the following.

1. Open the Creative Surround Mixer and change the speaker setup to 5.1. Test all the channels
2. Hit the settings button and place a check mark in 'AC3 Decode'
3. Open PowerDVD. Open the 'Configuration' menu. Change the audio to 'SPDIF'
4. You should get sound from PowerDVD.

If you have a digital connection to an external decoder, do the following.

1. Open the Creative Surround Mixer and change the speaker setup to 5.1. Check 'Digital Output Only'
2. Hit the settings button and remove the check mark from 'AC3 Decode'
3. Open PowerDVD. Open the 'Configuration' menu. Change the audio to 'SPDIF'

Hope this helps

Down load Windows Media Player 7.0 or later. Once it is installed you should have no problem with digital audio. I had a win 98 system with onboard sound and no audio in header. I went crazy trying to enable sound until I installed Windows Media Player 7.0.

There may well be other work arounds but this may work for you.

Okie I got Cambridge Soundworks Desktop Theater 5.1 speaker set (Dolby Digital)

This set of speakers has 3 modes: Music, Movie and Stereo Four Point.

My speakers are hooked up correctly cuz the speaker sets own test run correct sounds.

First i tried the Creative Sound Mixer Test a default (AC3 Decode checked) for 5.1 Set up. Result was:

No sound from Center Channel in each of the three speaker modes
Correct sounds from Front (Left and Right) speakers in each of the three modes
Correct sounds from Rear (Left and Right) speakers in Stereo Four Point Mode only.
Subwoofer was not tested

Then followed crudas advice and checked the Digital Sound only option (AC3 Decode checked), result was:

No sound from Center Channel in each of the three speaker modes
Correct sounds from Front (Left and Right) speakers in each of the three modes
No sound from Rear (Left and Right) speakers in each of the three speaker modes
Subwoofer was not tested

Finally unchecked both AC3 Decode and Digital Sound only, result was:

No sound from Center Channel in each of the three speaker modes
Correct sounds from Front (Left and Right) speakers in each of the three modes
No sound from Rear (Left and Right) speakers in each of the three speaker modes
Subwoofer was not tested

I am not testing powerDVD till i can get the speakers to work in simple windows first.

Any other ideas? I dont want to install Windows Media 7 because i dont like it. But i might if nothing else will fix it!

Which model DTT do you have? I'm pretty sure the DTT2500 does not do full 5.1 Dolby Digital decode. Hence, the center channel will be missing. You will only get four point at most and that is only in Stereo Four Point mode. Sorry. My daughter has 2500 and she has that issue also.

Akaz1976, actually the OS' digital audio feature is not even necessary for DVD. I personally use an old Toshiba DVD drive and although the option is available, if it is selected a warning message comes up (apparently it is on Microsoft's sh*tlist of drives known to have a problem with this feature) so I do not enable it, nor is an audio cable attached, but audio from DVD is still transferred over the bus and I do use SPDIF out to a receiver. So the digital audio feature is really only for music CD's.

So stick with crudas' advice (Mixer Digital Output Only / AudioHQ SPDIF Pass-Through & 48KHz, PowerDVD Audio SPDIF) and go from there. Disable all EAX Console Effects and CMSS 3D and see if any DSP effects can be disabled on the Cambridge system. Be sure to test with a 5.1 source and also that the Cambridge system can decode it -namely don't use a DTS source if it lacks that decoder but use a DD source). When playing a DVD or VOB file in PowerDVD select the option to Show Information to confirm a 5.1 source.

P.S. as for the digital audio feature if you want it for CD's, I have a fuzzy recollection (yes, another one) that only WDM audio drivers will allow it as opposed to previous VXD ones. But as always, Google is your friend :)
