I have a new retail Biostar M7VIT Pro , and Athlon XP 2400+ cpu. Periodically the system will completely shut down, and will have a warning beep playing over and over. The beep is one long and then one short, continuously.
Ive tried another cpu/hsf, heat doesnt seem to be the problem as the cpu peaks out at about 39C.
Ive reinstalled the Crucial 512mb PC2700, PNY Ti4200 several times to make sure everything was seated properly.

Here are my system specs:

Biostar M7VIT Pro
XP 2400+ w/HSF
512mb Crucial PC2700 (x1)
Enlight 300W PSU
60g Seagate HD
Lite-On 52x cdrw
floppy

ANy help would be greatly appreciated.

Just built a system so I've been dealing with various beep codes and the process of determining their cryptic meanings...Anyhow, it sounds like you have one of two problems:

1) It's possible (and this was my problem with the most current board I purchased) that in testing the board for functionality, either at the factory or the store you purchased it from, settings were saved into the CMOS battery which are causing a conflict with your current hardware setup. (They ought to clear this before it leaves the shelf, but they don't always remember!) To clear it, turn off the power and remove the power cord. Remove the CMOS battery (round flat type, it's pretty obvious usually) and briefly short the contacts with a paper clip. Replace the battery and plug the power in again, then turn it back on and see if it works. It will go straight to BIOS setup so you can reset your system date/time and the such.

or

2) There is a problem with your video card or system memory. To test, if the board has onboard video, run it without an AGP card. If no onboard video, simply try a different card you know works. If that doesn't work, try different memory (if you have spare laying around) or simply remove it and test to see if you get the same beep code. (if you don't, it means there is a different beep code for memory problem, so that isn't what's wrong)

Hope I've at least steered you in the right direction.

cheers!
