Hello. I installed a Phenom II X4 955 today and I have a problem.

The stock cooler idles at 3500-4000 RPM, and when playing a game it goes all the way up to 5500-6300 RPM. This is very, very annoying as it sounds like I have a jet inside my PC.

I don't think this is normal. Also, the speed is not consistent. It may be at 5000 rpm when gaming, and for a second it goes to 6100, then down again.

I checked and the fan is properly connected to the CPU_Fan connector on the motherboard.

I can't play any game because of this, it's just SO loud. Any help please? Thanks.

The stock heatsink is small and its fan is equally small. Therefore it needs to spin just as fast to push enough air to cool it. The best solution would be to use an aftermarket heatsink, like a CM Hyper212 Evo. Do check first if your case would fit a tower heatsink with a 160mm clearance.

Now the CPU is at 33ºC idling, and the fan is 4800RPM. Isn't that too much for the temp?

Also, I hit 6700rpm while playing Battlefield 3.

Smaller fans has to spin a lot faster to push the same amount of air as a larger one. 4.8kRPM isn't unheard of when it comes to AMD's stock heatsink. You can tune it to spin less but you'll have higher temps with little to no improvement in the noise output. Like I said, getting an aftermarket heatsink is the best solution.

The reason your CPU is at 33* is because its spinning so fast. Small fans need to spin faster to push enough air to cool things down. Your best bet is to buy a CM hyper 323 or TX3. I replaced a stock X4 cooler with a TX3 and both temps and noise dropped considerably.

tomi19: Tell us what the specs are for your computer. In particular, motherboard and computer case. It will help in the recommendation of an aftermarket cpu heatsink/fan.

The speeds of the stock fan are normal to keep the cpu cool.

What's your temps while gaming? Is that a 955 be?

You don't automatically need to go buy more parts yet. The stock coolers on those were usually OK for mild OC. Should be able to change the fan delta in BIOS to help quiet it down at stock speeds.

Spend $20-30 and get a Hyper 212+. Keeps my FX-6100 nice and cool and the fan never spins above 575rpm.
