Need help with P3 heatsink

UThomas

Senior member
Alright, my second game computer has one of those Tyan boards that has a slot 1 and a socket 370 interface. So I ditched the P2 400 I had and got a socket 370 P3 1 Ghz. Anyway, I went to put the heatsink on and when I tried to hook it onto the little stupid plastic tabs I found one of them was broken!

So does anyone know a good way to keep a heatsink on without those tabs? Also, there are offset tabs on the socket but my heatsink doesn't hook on to those. Are there any that do? Any help would be apreciated, I was not too amused when I found out.

Yes - I have busted off both of the center lugs on the socket of my Asus CUSL2-C and still was able to get my HSF to work. I had a few threads on here about it a while back, lets see if I can find it... Here is one of them.

To answer your question directly:

From clumsum:

There are now hsf's available w/retaining clips that have three slots on each side, for Socket A's and others, these will usually work on Socket 370 zif-sockets.......
If you broke the small center tab off of each side, you should still have a larger off-set plastic tab on each side ..............?
I am looking at a slocket adapter w/Socket 370 zif-socket ...........

If you still have at least one intact tab on each side of the socket then the above hsf retaining clip will work, ................
The brands that come to mind are:

Taisol CGK-742092 - Large hsf designed for Socket A - Not easy to find in-stock $20. - $30.
Cooler Master DP5-5H53-01 - Small hsf designed for Socket A - cheap about $15.

Hope this helps, I feel your pain 😉 -Wiz

Thanks. I ended up paying $30 to have a Taisol CGK-742092 2nd day aired to me. Should work fine. Still not amused though. Crappy plastic, you know there has to be a better way...

Well, here is what I did (YMMV)...

I fiddled around with it for a long time and ended up using tywire (about 19 guage steel wire)
to tie it down to the offset lugs that were left over after busting off the center ones. I
made it tight by twisting the wire after it was in place. Believe it or not this brought the
cpu temp down by 5 - 7 C as opposed to when I had the proper clip holding the thing on
(before I broke the lugs).
Mine is an Alpha PAL6035 with the 7500rpm Delta fan.
I was going to go with the Taisol until I broke off the second side. After that I had to be a
bit more willing to experiment...

Good luck with yours, and of course be careful with your remaining lugs 😉
