need help with oldschool vid card

i have a question. my 256KB vid card will only do 16 colors in windows, but it does 256+ in dos photo programs. how can i make it do 256+ in windows? the settings wont let me do anymore than 16. change the driver? it is Western digital based paradise video card.

Did you try the generic SVGA driver? True VGA can only do 16 colors in 640x480 - stepping up to 8 bit color gets you to SVGA. Try looking under (Standard display types). You might need to force the selection by not using auto detect, and using "Show all hardware" as opposed to "Show compatible hardware".

Also keep in mind that if the card's bios isn't VESA compatible (depends on age of the card) enough, that driver may not work.

It simply cannot be done. Windows requires 640X480 and you want 256 colors. You would need at least 300k RAM. Since nobody makes 300k cards, you would require a board with at least 512k video RAM. Higher resolutions and/or color depth would demand even more memory.

Mia culpa; I did the math, and it seems that 300k *is* needed for 8 bit color at 640x480. Wonder what'll happen if you do it anyway... probably something nasty :(
