Need help with older laptop please

A friend of mine gave me their old IBM T21, that they bought used from E-Bay several months ago. Everything seems fine with it, except for one thing.

When he got it, it had a wireless internet card and he just used that. I don't have a wireless router and went to plug it into the NIC slot in the back, and nothing happened. I checked the device manager and the computer doesn't even recognize the mini PCI Ethernet connection back there.

I have no idea what kind of Ethernet adapter is back there to look for drivers. I checked the BIOS and there isn't an option to enable or disable the Ethernet port in back, so I'm stuck. Is this laptop not recognizing its Ethernet connector, or is it broken?

Any advice is appreciated.
