My friend wants me to help update her old Compaq Armada 1120.

From what I can tell, it has a Pentium processor (there's an Intel Inside Pentium sticker on it). I want to install Windows 98 on it. The computer has 24 MB of RAM so Win98 should work ok. I don't know much about laptop networking hardware so I'll just try to describe what I see. On the left, there's what looks like two little cards with small slots. One slot is long and one is short. There is software for a 56K modem on the computer so I assume one is a modem. The PC Card software detects two devices: one is the modem, and the other is labeled as KXLC002 KME. What is the second card? My friend says that she has an external CD-ROM drive but she can't find it. Is there a way to install Win98 over a network using the hardware that I have now? Thanks.

I figured out that the KXL C002 is a PC card for a panasonic CD-ROM drive. I need a way to get Win98 onto this system. I'm thinking that I can copy the Win98 CD files onto the harddrive and install off the hard drive. Is there any easy way to do this? I'm guessing laptop hdd's don't use a standard IDE interface.

the KXLC002 is a scsi pccard, probably here cdrom hooked to that scsi card.. ive never tried to install win98 from a network, i suppose you could try using a network bootdisk and copying all the files to a partition on the hd, but i dont know how well that would work .. good luck ..

I wouldn't be too optimistic on installing 98 on it. I have an armada with a pentium 133, 48 megs ram, etc. and I thought 98 would be the way to go but after looking at the compaq site I realized that the machine was designed with 95 in mind and that the drivers didn't work well for 98 and weren't recommended. I'd be very careful to check out your model number on the compaq site and see if there are documents relating to installing 98 on that machine. Otherwise stick with the oem version of 95 (which you can pick up on the trading forum for very little money). Besides, with 24 mb ram you want to have 95 anyway as it's memory requirements are less than 98 and the extra 4 mb or so of ram you save will make a difference with your applications.

Cparker, you're right. I went to the site and Win98 requires software "enhancements" in order to run correctly. Win95, however, seems to be fully supported. Thanks for the suggestion.
