I am having a problem, I took out my old NIC and didn't uninstall it from the device manager. The problem is that now that I have added a new one in a diffrent PCI slot and try to set it up (Make IP static) but it says it is in use by the old card (IP), if I let this card also use it it does not work and get problems with system lock ups. Is their a way to remove old devices in Windows Xp Pro that are no longer in the system?

EDIT: Did some searching and figuered it out. WOW! you would be amazed how many things a person has still installed on their PC

If you would like to se how go here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q315539

Have you tried doing a search through the registry to try to manually remove the old value from the old NIC?

Easiest way I would think would be to run REGEDIT and do a search for the IP address. When you find the old NIC either give it a new IP address that you wouldn't use (10.0.0.254 would be good) or try removing the entry completely.

Honestly I've never had problems forcing WinXP to assign the same IP to muliple cards as long as those cards aren't plugged in at the same time. Go fig.
